Mounted EDIS trigger wheel on a T4 engine (w/pix!)

Post by msoultan »

Hey Everyone,
Some of you might have seen this method for mounting a trigger wheel on a type 4 engine:

http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... gger+wheel

I was going to do that, but I stared at all the pieces a little bit longer and found a different way to install things. The other way will work, but my concern was trying to get the trigger wheel lined with the sensor and not being able to see the gap because the fan was in the way. The way allows you to install the sensor and wheel and verify that everything is lined up and then install the fan.

What I did was take an old A/C pulley and milled down the OD until it had an 0.007 interference fit with trigger wheel. I heated up the trigger wheel, cooled down the pulley, and once everything was lined up, I pressed 'em together;you'll notice that I only pressed the trigger wheel onto one side of the pulley. As for the sensor, I cut off the mounting ears and bent a piece of aluminum to squeeze the sensor against the housing. I made the holes in the aluminum slightly larger than need to allow for adjustment.

Here are pics of the install. Enjoy!

NICE!

I would TIG that wheel on in 3-4 spots, crankshaft harmonics happen.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

My friend has a mig welder. Would it be ok if I tack welded it in 4 spots around the wheel? I was thinking about that, but the only reason I didn't was because I was worried it would warp, but I guess a quick tack wouldn't heat it up too much.

Normally these wheels are press-fit onto a hub of some sort - do you really think it could come off?

Pile beat me to it. At 6000rpm, I''d like some spot welds holding that together. But it may need balancing after welding.

If that comes off at speed, it will lodge in the immediate area and jam your crank in a millisecond, grenading your engine.

Ok.. that's easy enough. I'll spot weld it up and bring it to the shop to be balanced.

Thanks!

do you guys think I'm going to run into any temp issues in regard to the location of the sensor? It's not under the airflow of the oil cooler, but it is next to it..

not sure about the heat at that point, someone else will know. I was just thinking, is that toothed wheel Alum. or steel. To weld it, it needs to be the same material as the hub you pressed it on.

But 1st, and most important, is...............................

.......it would need to be magnetic

which means its probably steel.

I suggested TIG as the existing bits would basically be melted... together, if it's a press fit, no additional material should be needed.

Having them balanced wouldn't be a bad idea, but if they were balanced before and were cut true, and no additional material is added...

I think it's steel - a magnet sticks to it...

How secure is the sensor mounted? I would be afraid of movement of the sensor, but I'm not that well versed in setting up a trigger wheel. Is there any fudge factor if it moves some?

That thing's not going anywhere - it's a pinch fit between the shroud and the aluminum bracket and there are two nyloc nuts on there...

Dont crack that sensor, it can set up some erratic signals. Pulled out some hair once till i found that.
2840 type4, turboed and injected with my GM conversion. runs great and still needs fine tuning.

Nice! It seems that there could be a market for some enterprising individual with a lathe to jump into production of EDIS trigger wheel adaptors with a VW T4 center hub, so that it could be installed like the version here? I've been looking a T4 A/C pulley for quite awhile - Nada...
