Joxracing's 1966 Baja "The Resurection"

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I said don't laugh. Well it is hard to not laugh I am sure trying to balance a camera in one hand hold it steady and tell what your doing while you do it just aint that easy.
I made a few mods to the test board.

Here is a video of demonstrating the effects of test lights and LED lights on the secondary spark when hooked between the primary terminals of the coil. In parts of the video you can't see the spark but you can hear it.

How many Boxers do we have on this site? It's gotta be 5 or 6 now.

I'd throw a spare Bosch Blue coil in the tool kit, the flame throwers don't tend to last too long.

The Flame throwers require a separate ballast resistor.
The only times I have ever seen a bad one, that little minor detail was overlooked.

But...
You can pick up a nice Jacobs coil on Evilbay for a reasonable price, and it will work... forever.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

What is what?

Bosch red coils need external ballasts?

This is NOT a bad thing. It just is.

So would a Jacobs, with a std ignition.

You can get them at any auto parts store.

You want a TOTAL resistance of ~ 3.6-4 ohms, from the coil AND the ballast combined.

The blue just has it built in, but that heats up the coil.

how much are they?

do i absoulutly need this to make it run??

You all know of my ignition problems, but that new coil and dizzy, and new plugs should take care of it......right?

(p.s. the dizzy is a 009 electronic pointless ignition)

A ballast resistor is like $5-7 bucks.
Std part, pretty much all cars had them until the mid 70s.

(Even VWs, but Bosch built them into the coil for better or worse)

Read this thread. (whole)
Some good ballast resistor info on page 7.
