Porsche 993 Wheels Powder coat or paint

Post by radstude »

I have a set of Porsche cup II wheels, that need painted. I wanted to powder coat them, but I heard that it can weaken the metal, because of the heat. Is this true?

Powder coating is preferred for wheels.

They will not be baked nearly hot enough to hurt them.

I heard that powder-coat doesn't hold up to direct sunlight as well as paint...

Here we go :

Some shops using a not very fine grit to remove the old coats of paint of the wheel(s) this makes the surface to made "harsh" and they do apply more coats of color/primer instead to sand it down as required. Then the wheel does not have a "mirror" finish surface when baked. Also the thicker the coats the easier to damage the coat. The Porsche oem producers (STI,ATS,FUCHS,MAHLE) never powder coat their wheels only top level products used to paint them with the "traditional" way.Regular paints also have a rock solid to be scrated clear coat to protect your newly painted wheels. And clatter is correct sometimes if the laquer applied poorly in powder coat application it start to yellowin.
