baja kids - hydraulic clutch

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

just noticed in one of your pics there is no sleeve on the throttle cable where it comes thru the shroud. might have a smoother pedal action w/ one, and it will definatly make it last longer. reall nice looking!
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

So far, only the one where he broke a front ball joint.Seems to happen quite a bit on RED cars.I tried to get him to paint it white, but no luck so far. :D

Time for the update.......

So... where to start haha I have put over 1500 miles on the new motor so far and its still running really strong and kickin butt 8) Anyway Because of the power pulley i have on my new motor I was advised to invest money into a quality CHT (cylinder head temp) gauge. After some research I ended up going with the Dakota Digital unit. The gauge is top-notch quality and is very accurate but it was very pricey. It was worth it and I would advise one to every one with an air-cooled motor. Personally I think its the gauge that not very many people have but every one should have and any one that has one will probably agree with me on this one. I know no one likes to just read my lengthy posts so ill through in lots of pics for ya :D Here’s the final instillation of the gauge in my car.

Over all I am very happy with the product and would highly recommend it to every one. Next on the update was some interior work that I have done to clean it up a little.
I had some carpet in my Baja before but it got old and shaggy looking so I decided to put my Baja on the Herbie diet and tossed the old carpet out and spray painted the floor pans black. Looks pretty good in my opinion 8) Here’s a couple of shots with the floor mats in and out, enjoy :D

Next up is some little motor dress up pieces that I made. One day when I was bored haha I cut up a Red-Bull can to make a coil cover out of it and I also made a cover for my oil filter too but out of a monster can haha =) I also put some red outer-ware filters on it that match the car. I’m very surprised about how many complements i get on them people go... Wow that’s sick... haha Heres a pic for ya...

Next up is what most of you have probably been waiting for......... The maiden voyage of my little street car OFF ROAD!!! For the first time with my new 1915 8) I took my car up to Alpine on some of the trails up there and it was a blast for the most part........ Had some problems with my carbs I think it was the float bowls over filling and bogging up I just need to adjust the floats that’s all but I also had some major breakage for the first time.... haha As the story go's haha..... I was just cursing back on my way off the trails because it was starting to get dark and all of a sudden WAM!!!! my car fly’s over to the right side of the trail the steering wheel was ripped from my hands as i was doing about 50 my vision is blurred and I here some horrendous noise and my car does a 360 spin in the dirt!!!! By this time I have already soiled my pants from shock and I’m thanking god that I’m still alive!!! Definitely the closest I have been from dieing........

Ok..... not really haha but I was just trying to make my post entertaining haha  Parts of the story where true just not the cool parts haha.Well.... in short I broke a lower ball joint  So.... The trip was a lot of fun over all but was more fun driving the car off the trails at night for about 5 miles or so going less then 5 miles per hour yeaaaaa not to much fun haha I had my buddy come pick me up with his flat bed trailer to tow my car home from me. Anyway here is some pics from my trip!!!

The Baja before breakage haha

Heres one of the trails that I was cursing down. Alot narrower and tighter then it looks in the pictures.

I hate to tellyou but the placement of that fan is going to change the temp reading you are getting. Too close to the gauge.

:D

The Dakota gauges are temp compensated. Works both ways...

On a VDO it might have some effect.

The fan cools YOU because you sweat.

The gauges.. Not so much.

Awesome car!
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Mr. Driver, I was kidding, didn't you see the smiley face below the text. :D Of all people, I didn't think I would or could snooker you.

The temp sensor is in the head, the gauge doesn't read heat it reads OHMs.

I was intrigued/tickled by the picture (a fan blowing on the temp gauge), that all, nothing else. I am sorry I said anything now.

A broken or pulled ball-joint is one of the nightmares I have. I need to get stops welded in. I have them for my project buggy but not the one I am surrently using. I do inspect them a regular basis but...

I forgot to mention, your buggy looks pretty good. It is especially cool sitting oiut there in the scrub brush showing signes of actively being use. We don't have trails like that here (at least ones that haven't been closed down. Bikes do have some ride areas but cross-country rides like you guys have are, as far as I know, not an option around here.

that happened to me on the other side about 2 months ago. one of the down sides of running a ball joint front end on an off road car. i've seen some not so pricey link pin beams on race-dezert complete drum to drum. when we go on trips i bring a complete set of extra trailing arms with ball joints on them of course. so if youre ever out in ocotillo when i'm out there and you break one let me know
I just wanna drive it that's it.
