VolkswagenSlave's baja build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

VolkswagenSlave's baja build

Post by VolkswagenSlave »

I thought I should finally start a build page here. My project has been on going for a few years now but because of school, work, and the normal excuses I haven't made much progress. I now have some free time and have been getting a lot of work done.

This is how I got it.

After removing the body, to start work on the floor pans.
Image
A stand that made things really easy to move the car around with only one person.

Replacing the floor pans.

Picture of the bottom after the bed liner was applied.

Picture with the body back on and the 3in body lift installed.

The latest picture I have of the body kit on.

There will definitely be more soon.

Besides driving it, what are your long term plans for it? Thanks for showing your build.

Whats wrong with the sport wheels? I actually just got back from the tire/wheel store. I ordered a pair of white spoke wheels, and some Yokohama rubber. 30X9.50R15LT in the rear and 7.00R15 in the front.

As far as future plans go, I plan on building a larger engine (the one I currently have is a 1500cc), also upgrade the suspension, and putting in a roll cage. I also plan on painting it eventually, but that's not on the top of the list. The list is growing day by day.

Nothing wrong with stock steel wheels they are very strong just a little narrow for your rear tire choice. With the 30" tires you will want the 3 rib 5.38 R&P Bus IRS for your next upgrade. Good work!

Nothing, I'm running stock wheels up front. My old 74 super had the sport wheels. I'd love to see um on a baja...

That's the tire combo I run. 4.5" wide up front and 7" wide in the rear. The stock rims have alot more backspace than the white spokes. 4" vs. 2.5". They stay under the fenders, but you'll need to adjust the steering stops a bit.

Hey, its far enough along to be mistaken for a storage shelf now! :D I don't know why but they do attract "stuff". My wife often uses my buggy body for the same thing. By-the-way, your wooden body stand looks very similar to mine. My stand is high and wide enough that I can roll the pan under it for storage (when the pan is one wheels that is 8) ).

Your Baja is coming right along and looking very good. Keep up the good work.
Lee

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.

I was looking forward to seeing you run the sport wheels...

Looking good. You came a long way in a short time. What's up with the Vette? Sorry, I like to look around...

Thanks for the support.

The stand is something we just threw together, it made things really easy to move around with just one person.

The vette is my fathers project, its a 77', same year as the bug.

Yeah I know I shouldn't be using as a shelf anymore, its getting time for a full clean out.

The other day the car taught me a lesson, make sure your brake lines are in properly. I was adjusting the pads and all of a sudden I hear a fizz and drip sound, looked around and saw a puddle near the rear passenger side tire. Found out I striped the coupler that goes between the hard and soft lines. I'm glad I wasn't on the highway! Its fixed now.

I have been getting some more parts ready and I found that I don't have the passenger door glass. I do have a second drivers side door that has glass in it and was wondering if it was possible to us it on the passenger side. If so what would I have to do to switch it over?
