Dyno results from a 2,2 ltr type4 turbo update p.4

Post by Wally »

Extra fan put onto the air-air intercooler:

Monitoring intake temps and other vital parameters on the laptop:

Result: 222 hp @ 5350 rpm and 225 ft.lbs/ 305 Nm
195.0 hp at the wheels :

For those wondering: my intercooler is somewhat 'hidden' in the ducktail rear spoiler:

Thank you guys for the help and all threads that made me wiser and let me make this happen! :D

That deck lid is killer. I really like the seamless integration between it and the intercooler. Sweet ride.

Very nice job Wally! I like the power band on that T-IV, nice low rpm power peak. That's what I'm shooting for w/my build. That intercooler fits really nice into your ducktail deck lid. And that huge cooler should drop your intake temps a good bit!

Nice lookin ride too. Wheels/tires/flared fenders look sharp.

very cool, looks like that must be great to drive without having to rev the nuts outta of it. so is that a standard 914 2 litre then? what boost and compression? and how you controlling the ignition timing? very impressed 8)

Thanks guys!

Yes, its actually a bone stock 914 2.0 (type 4) engine; only added single Scat springs and Ti retainers.
The turbo is actually a little too big and I could have better torque down low as the AFR was too rich there, which showed in the log.
Boost is almost exactly 1 bar or 14.5 psi. Boost is controlled by the ecu through a PWM solonid valve.
Ignition is controlled by the ecu (dta S60) as well and boost retard is programmed depending on boost. I have very little ign.retard (3 degrees max, which is 26 advance remaining at 14.5 psi) as the air intake temps stay really, really low, like max 9F higher than ambient...
Turbo is a used suby ball-bearing WRX item (IHI VF34).
Stock CR of that engine is 1:8.0
Should it want to ping, there is J&S safeguard 'Vampire' knock control device under the rear seats but the gauge has not lit up once..

Later this year a dedicated 2,2 ltr turbo-engine is being made (when I get all the parts back in time..), which the turbo should be just erfectly suited for. Glad I tried everything out on a stock engine first.

It seems so simple...
Wally, will you be at EBI or DDD6 this summer? I would love to be able to check your car in more detail!

Nice work, I like the torque curve. Are you using copper head gaskets, or nothing? When I built mine I used nothing.

Where is the turbo located?

Hi Yvre,
Yes, I hope to make it to both these meetings. Just come over and I'll show you

Kevin,
Its a really stock engine, so it has the stock type 4 'alu' sealing rings which are a big risk with any type 4, let alone a turbo... but I haven't taken the heads off, not even to change valve sprngs, so the d*mn rings are still there...

Turbo is located just in front of cylinder no.1, sort of 'under' the startermotor and just before the axles. Its a (very) tight fit, but it usually is huh?
This is whilst mounting and fitting (not everything is connected here):

Are those hp/tq figures extrapolated flywheel figs or at the wheel figures?

Great job none-the-less!

I thought I had that mentioned?

195.0 hp at the wheels :
So, 195 hp was measured at the rear wheels. The 221.8 hp is calculated somehow to give flywheel hp.
If you divide them, you notice they probably used a 13.7 % loss. My 915 tranny is usually rated at 15% loss on PelicanParts BB, but who cares

wally... a few things:

1) your car looks great and the install is very nice
2) congrats on your readings: lots of power from stock engine = ace!
3) how do you find your turbo? im using a TD05 (STI scoobie on my 1955cc and it dont start making boost untill nearly 4k and reaches full boost over 6k... Im going to put the TD04 (WRX turbo) back on in the hope it will make full boost sooner, but could consider a turbo like yours if they are worth it
4) just read your website... also very impressive! whats the latest with those heads?

That sounds really great for a 2 liter. The low end power is amazing, I'm really surprised to see that you have so many hp only at 5000RPM from such a "small" engine.

I'm really looking forward to knowing your times next week. I'll be watching you there
