Rear Compartment 2Dr under window cover Options?

Post by vwbill »

Hey what options do we have for the rear pressed board black cover under the rear window? My cars' just basically started to crumble after removal so I just fiber glassed and super resin puddied it and painted but think I might still cover with a thin fabric too.. Can we get something to remake it or close match?? Billjr

God!...what are you freaks reading my brainwaves again? I was think about that part half of this weekend.

Years ago...about 2001 or so, I was trying to get ahold of one good one...and make a cast of it. Then cast it out of zinc.
I can also easily heat bend one out of plastic...but most heat bendable plastics will not survive the sun and heat.

This is one of those things that I may not be able to duplicate to look exactly, but I can make a good looking part for this area.

I also want to split the duct underneath and install a small tubular fan in each end. This way it would really pull air across teh rear window and vent it out. Ray

I intend to cover mine with cloth and Elastoseal latex roofing compound. Should leave a black cloth textured surface that is well attached and structurally strong.

The problem many have...me included...is that ours totally disintegrated. We have nothing left to repair so we need a replacement part.
In one respect, its really easy to just carpet up to teh back window edge, but that would be defeating a samll but very effective function.

When you just crack your front windows.....and you see that really interesting "curved" or notched glass top in the windows in your doors....they are designed that way. They replace the vent wing windows. They draw air in, move it over the ceiling and down teh back windshield...pulled through the slots and out the louvers at each corner in the rear.
If your heat is working properly and you roll your windows down just enough to expose these ground notches on teh front windows...it will defrost and dry your rear window in half the time, greatly help heat distribution...and do this relatively draft free.
So...that back cardboard piece is actually a very important duct. Ray
