You are on the right track Albert. Five years ago I bought the audi 4000 and both 5000 books from Haynes.

It is amazing....visually.... the similarities between some of the parts in the audi transmissions to what we have in the 004. Things like the way certain things are handled and done...and the synchros and synchro hubs and sliders.

Bill...since you are currently "inside" of your 004....if you can find teh audi 4000/5000 books....would you look inside?

Some of teh similarities are very subtle...but once your brain is infused with "004".....and you look at the Audi parts....I believe that you will also say that the 004 parts are very...."Audi-esque". From teh pictures and counting teeth...I beleive its quite possible that some of those Audi transmissions may have some synchros that will work in the 004.

I have not personally been inside of an Audi transmission.

Look at the 013 model...and I think the 015 model.
Other people have said that all of the VW/Audi transmissions pretty much look the same inside.

I contend that is not true. I can tell 004 parts from across the room next to type 1, 091, 002 and Water cooled rabbit. The way the parts are shaped and finished is subtley differnt and unique....and very Audi like.

Every time I work on a 004...I get the dinstinct feeling it was an Audi or NSU product. I would like to get your opinion on this. Ray

yes ,,ray,, wend i said ,,,audi,,80-90,100-200,, for the usa the no,,is,,4000 or 5000,, audi 80-90 are équal to 4000, and audi 100-200 is 5000 for the usa ,, and i have many parts (SUBSTITUTE ) FOR MY 412 FROM AUDI,, example my 412 seal for the filler neck is from ..audi ac hose protector,,he fitt no.1 on my 412 ,,if you want the audi pn.. i have ,, and my spark plug seal on my 412 ,are from audi ,,for the électric wire door seal,,same thing,, they close the spark plug hole to the perfection plus they are more deep,,, plus they keep the spark plug wire in place ,,, i have the audi pn. if you have need,,,albert

Here's a page out of an Audi 4000 Haynes manual showing transmission. Looks familiar indeed. Maybe I'll pick up a book and check it out.

I spoke to Long enterprises several years ago. They have "0" partsfor the 004. They have awesome techniques though...and my bet is that if you desperately needed something modified to work you could get them to try it for $$$.
Stuff VW advertizes that they do types 1,2,3, and4....my bet is that when you say you have a type 4...they suspect its a type 4 bus...or an automatic. Ray

The 5 speed Audi transaxle is nice, but wouldn't it need to be upside-down to work in a rear engined configuration? If this were mechanically possible, the shift pattern would end up strange. I'm not saying it's impossible...

i thing the only possible pattern is with the big stell wire ,not with the rod, it is possible to do many configuration with the stell wire, i d,t have a chance for to see the mec.book for the ,,brazilian,,,gol,,,,(,,, not golf,,) for to fix the trs 4 speed from fox with air cool from type 1 ,,we never know with ,vw,, may bee with an ,,élastic,,

Yes, what albert is noting is that there is an intermediate five speed or four speed from either one of the 5000's or the 4000. I can't remember if it is the 014 or 016. But it uses a single rod shifter. The differential...if memory serves...ill not be able to be flipped because this is a reverse pinion true hypoid (I think...at least some were). I think teh tranny would need to be flipped.

Also...bear in mind....there is a huge range of final drive ratios...some are not quiite great for what we have in mind.

ray are you familiar with the german language ,, i have in my,,cpu,,, one microfilm,, for the vw,, type1-2-3-4 etc,, for the tech. information,,,not the mécanic,,( haynes or climer ) i have see many dimention for the geer in her différent,, trs,, motor ,, wells,, and more,, i d,t can reed the german,, i just can look the pic. and see the dimention,, i d,t can put all that on the forum ,, 200-300 pages,, plus that take 3 loops for to see something,, i thing i can send you that if you have need ,, i am not sure if i can send only one page or if i clic on one page you receeve only one page not all the book ,,albert

,,RAY ,, i just geve a small look in this german ,,micro film,, the,,, fu ??? ,, they change many parts in the trs, for the 411-412 for différent years,, they are not all the same for the 1.7 or 1,8 ,, the case parts for the vw k70 is good for the 411,, a reel mixing pot,, includ the 914 ,,that take 10 years of university for to learn that ,,ops they show appx,,not 200-300 page but 1000 pages ,,albert

Yes...that is what I have been figuring. The K70....and probably seven somewhat the old 100LS and maybe even some of the NSU vehicles....have parts that went into the type 4. There is just so littel technically explicit literature on those vehicles. Ray
