Aluminium Welding.

Post by Wentzel »

Hi,

I want to do some aluminium welding. Mostly 2" thin wall tubing and thin sheets. What is the easiest way to do it without expensive welders etc, etc. Can it be brazed with success? Durafix easyweld rods?

Any advice welcome.
Thanks

A BASIC COURSE IN TECHNO-WELDING Aluminum welding

Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

"Techno welding" is NOT welding at all. It is a form of "Brazing". Brazed joints are typicaly only about 1/3 the strength of the parent material. This stuff has its applications, but should not be confused with welding.

For thin sheetmetal I prefer a gas torch, like a MECO Midget or Victor Aviator. There are several other brands as well.

Hi,

I decided to go with proper welding and took the project to a workshop for welding. I cut all the pieces and stuck them together with tape in the required position. It took some time and I did it in a few steps but I think it came out very nice.

Thanks

WOW, David,.....This place is a ghost town. I would think with the amount of aluminum that is used in high performance car's, there would be a larger interest.

I would imagine that the cost of a decent tig welder probably kills interest pretty quick...

You can also MIG weld aluminum. Use alu wire and 100% Argon gas.
It's not as pretty as TIG welding, but it can be used for some crude work. I haven't tried though... :) And I'm not sure all mig welders can do it. You may need to reverse polarity or something?

Hi Yes you can weld aluminum using the GMAW/ MIG process. For best results you should have a spool gun attachment for your welder. It is also possible but not recommended to use regular MIG set up but you need a teflon liner in your gun/whip, short whip (like 10') and keep the welder above the work so the wire is going down hill. You can't push AL wire uphill. With the right setup you can make some very nice welds.

I have a spoolmate 3035,I hated it with a passion, my welds looked like hot and steamy pile of @#$%. but after a I leaned to use it, I like it a lot. For speed and set up I love it. It welds really nice, I use it on Heavy Trucks ( steps ,fuel tanks brackets). I hardly never use tig anymore, but still tig on intercoolers. But for the money its well worth it.
