My Chenowth Update - A Build/Mod Thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

You are the first Explorer chassis I've seen that DIDN'T have at least 3x3's on it. That's what's on mine. Thes pics aren't great, but they show how my stuff sits with my 3x3's.
If you did the arm swap, I'de change it over to coilovers at the same time, since the longer arms would need a firmer torsion anyway.
You can see the slightly rearward angle of the axle in the first pic. (yea, yea...my stuff is filthy)

I have 300m torsions, so that will handle up to 3x3 arms. Can't really afford the whole switch in one shot as will need axles, etc., in addition to new shocks. My car was built as a 1600 chase car so most everything is 1600 so could use the parts in case something broke on the racer. Killer parts, but not want I want on an Explorer. Trying to squirrel money to buy a place, but damn its tempting to get out the wallet and buy buggy goodies right this minute. Does your '99 have the wider torsion?

Well, time to dust off this thread. Haven't done crap to the buggy, but have started to gather parts. Grabbed a built 091. Going with Foddrill 4" over king Kong front arms. Going with Chenowth tubular 3x3 rears. Probably going with FOA 2.5 coilovers out back (haven't bought those yet). I bought a 9 over beam for the buggy, but think I'll have a 10" over built. That's all I have to report.

Check your overall front/rear width. My car had a 9" over beam with 2.5"x1"wider arms and 3x3 rear arms. With the 4" BTR's front and rear..the front of the car was wider than the rear by about 2" or so. With a wider beam and wider front arms...it'll be that much more. A wider rear wheel solves that to some extent though.

My 02 has a 4" wider torsion housing. Chris did your 99 have that wide of a torsion housing? There were some changes b/t those years, but can't remember if that was one.

DeMinimis, with all this heavy duty bling you are putting on your rail, what are the future plans, are you going to be looking for a sponsor soon or what?

I could use a sponsor, or a benefactor, or just a creepy old uncle that can bounce me on his knee and tell me I'm purdy.

I just like things that don't break.

My Chenowth arms arrived today. Now I remember why I've searched for these for so long. Frick'n bomb proof. Four tubes instead of three. Spring plate arm is 3/8" instead of 1/4 ". Not much for weight savings, but that's not my concern. I want bomb proof desert insanity. That's what's I gots with these bad boys:

Hey Chris,

Checked your pic above. Those were more narrow at the torsion back then. Right now, I have a 13" over beam and 1600 rears (with the 4" wider torsion). The front wheels are slightly wider than the rear. Triming the front down to 10" over and adding to the rears, I should be just about perfect. I run 5" rear wheels.

Most the work I've been doing lately is selling off parts from my Chenowth to fund other purchases. WIll order up the conversion plates from Eagle on Monday. Even with the Chenowth rear arms, it looks like I'll only be running 12" rear shocks (unless my speculative measuring is wrong). Thought/hoped I'd be moving into 14s, but not looking that way Not wanting to move the upper mounts). Will wait until the conversion plates arrive and I mount up the arms before I risk rear shock purchases. Here's a question, why do all the dual rear shock racers run the c/o in front and the longer bypass in the rear?
