Ricko's New Ride-'71 Baja

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

isnt that cad plating?
In the plating industry, there are fewer and fewer shops that are allowed to do Cadmium plating. It is EXTREMELY environmentally unfriendly, chemical wise. All of Europe will not purchase any more aerospace parts that have been cad plated. There still is a market for it, barely, but it is a dying technology. Gold zinc plating looks a lot like Cad plating, but it is cheaper and more common commercially now days. There are very few commercial applications for Cad plating now due to cost.

It's not complicated, it's just expensive...

Well spent most of the weekend. Installing the solid mounts. Man, i give props to anyone who has pulled and installed an engine by themselves. Sheese. Especially if youre like me and dont have any kind of hoist or engine stand  .

Here is the rear mount with bumper mounts welded on. (And yes Skid, I did grind off all the plating around where I welded)

Front mount
Maybe I should have cleaned off that caked on dirt

Ive seen people post about having to clearance the bell housing or strap to fit over the starter bump, but I really didnt have a problem. I just bolted it on and it conformed to the shape of the bell housing

Heres a shot of my Plexi glass filler window

Ill probably be replacing that with Lexan soon though cause its starting to crack.

I picked up a trailer this week. It is a buggy trailer, but it fits the baja pretty well.

Like Leather said, good score dude! A tailer will be there for if the Baja breaks, and your toyota can go rescue the Baja in the bush.

Do you still want to look at that front end?
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

ALL RIGHT!! Its cage time.
Spent most of today just getting ready to install the new cage

Removed the seats and fuel cell
Image

Had a bit of a time removing the old show cage. Its a good thing if you cant break your own welds right?
Gutted the rest of the interior. No more headliner or anything else I can catch on fire when i put in the cage
Image

opened up the box, no instructions of course  But I already figured out where everything goes.

Let the mock-up begin!!

That thair trailer tyre needs some air in it.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Clamps are always great when you are working by yourself.
The guys over at BlindChicken have a pretty cool tutorial for fabbing your own, check out http://www.blindchickenracing.com/Tools ... _clamp.htm

I made a few and like them.
