Questions about my new 411 Variant

Post by the-unibonger »

I just got a 1971 411 Variant that is very close to stock. I plan on doing a complete restore and making this a show car. I am very knowledgeable about Bay Window Busses and Type 4 engines. So most of my questions will be regarding things specific to the 411.

1. Right now it has a Weber Progressive carb and Accuvance (chinese knock off of 009) dizzy. I have a newly re-manufactured stock dizzy (0-231-172-019). Can I use this and just cap the retard port? My carb has an advance port. Does it matter if the electronic pulse (?) connectors on the dizzy aren't hooked up to anything? I plan on going back to the stock D-Jet system when I find a complete setup.

2. There is an air port next to the #2 intake. What's this for? I can feel air coming out when the engine is running.

3. Air port from fan shroud. I know on a Bus this connects to the Charcoal Cannister in the engine compartment. I found the cannister located under the center of the 411. Does this port still connect to the cannister and if so, what is the routing?

4. Is there a brake booster on here someplace?

5. How do I get the seat to flip up so I can access the battery?

Questions with pics:

6. What's this and where can I get one? I assume it's to keep cool air flowing to the shroud.

7. 2 wires coming from oil pressure switch. On a Bus there is only one wire. The second wire goes to the carb. I believe this is for the cold start valve. Is this the correct hook up?
Image

8. 2 wires connected coming from coil into the harness. The black on eis the ignition wire. What is the other?

9. Holes over tranny support bolts. Should these be plugged and where can I get em?

I've already replaced all the fuel lines and vacuum lines to the tranny. Both were spliced together from several sections of hose. The fuel line was vacuum hose except for one 3 foot piece which looked original. Leaks everywhere. Leaky filter hung over dizzy.

Hi, from the pics your car looks clean. 'Got any more?

To try and answer your questions,
1. Right now it has a Weber Progressive carb and Accuvance (chinese knock off of 009) dizzy. I have a newly re-manufactured stock dizzy (0-231-172-019). Can I use this Yes and just cap the retard port? No, capping may have an effect on the curve as when the diapragm moves, you create a pressure gradient on that side of the vacuum can. Possibly negligible. My carb has an advance port. Check very carefully that what looks like a maifold vacuum port, next to the mixture screw, is not a solid brass dowel. Mine was and I've discovered this a few times since. Does it matter if the electronic pulse (?) connectors on the dizzy aren't hooked up to anything? No I plan on going back to the stock D-Jet system when I find a complete setup. A good choice, make sure you keep the terminals in that connector clean and dry.
2. There is an air port next to the #2 intake. What's this for? This is part of the crankcase ventilation system. I can feel air coming out when the engine is running. What you feel when the engine is running is piston ring blow-by, and for the most part that is normal.

4. Is there a brake booster on here someplace? No, some later 412's got a servo which you would have found in the front boot.

5. How do I get the seat to flip up so I can access the battery? I can't remember, I recall jump leads can be very dangerous. It took me a while to even find the battery

I have lot of questions I need to ask, I might try a thread like this.

Pics please :)

Thanks for the answers. The seat flips up to reveal the battery is hidden under the seat.

The dizzy has advance & retard ports. I hooked the advance up to the advance (not manifold) port on the carb and blocked the retard. This is what most people suggested.

I figured out the booster deal to.

I routed the head breather lines into the crankcase breather line and then to the air intake.

The mechanic who the PO had working on this car was a monster. Everything was hooked up wrong and rigged together. Luckily it seemed like all he touched was the carb & fuel/vacuum lines. The valves hadn't been adjusted in years and the valve cover gaskets were ancient & brittle. 90% of the oil coating the engine came from these very leaky gaskets. The foam seal by the heads was sopping with oil.
