Piston, Rod, Cylinder, Crank Data

Post by speedy57tub »

I am compiling data for an Excel spreadsheet of all of the different combos possible with all of the available p&c, rods, and crank strokes. Given the recent available rods for the 2.0L and the already available Type I rods, this would be of great help for all of us contemplating a different configuration. Can any of you provide data regarding piston pin height dimensions for the stock and aftermarket pistons? I need this dimension for the KB 96-mm (stroker and non-stroker), 103-105-mm various make pistons.

the spreadsheet will let you know more-or-less what the deck height will be with different combos and also what rods can be used to maximize rod-ratios while still keeping the engine from being too wide.

Thanks!

Here you go, with what info I can provide.

KB Pistons

96mm for 71mm stroke 24mm pin 1.412" C/H

96mm for 71+mm stroke 22mm pin 1.103" C/H

JE Pistons

96mm for 71mm stroke 24mm or 22mm 1.400" C/H

96mm for 71+mm stroke 22mm pin 1.110" C/H

103mm & 105mm because of so many variations, can be order with either pin size or any C/H with in reason, but current shelf stock is the same as 96mm bore.

A set of Custom JE's for a Type lV just went out with a bore size of 106.3mm-4.185" with a C/H of 1.110"

H Beam Rod Selection 2.0 ltr jrl (1.967"-50mm)

5.158"-131mm 24mm pin

5.325"-135.3mm 22mm pin

5.5"-139.7mm 22mm pin

5.7"-144.8mm 22mm pin

I will be running a set of the 5.7" rods in my motor, but have my rods out having them re-bushed to .927"-23.6mm Chevy pins.

Some one mentioned taking a set of flat top pistons out of the Porsche 3.3 turbo and opening up a set of Type lV barrels to 97mm and running them.

I thru in some extras to spice up your spread sheet. Which will, I am sure have to be updated for the unlimited Piston & Rod combos that could.

Great info Richard, thanks.... I will be measuring my stash of stock pistons and also those flow those dimensions into the spreadsheet....should be interesting to see what can be configured with the new rods.

BTW, I also thought about using 2.0L rods and stroker pistons on the 66-mm stroke with the journals machined down to 2.0L....would be great to use other rods!

I, don't think anybody bothered to make KB for the 66mm crank JE will Custom anything anyone would want.

There are the Big Bore kits for the 1.7 & 1.8, those really Thin slip in cyls, that I wouldn't even put on your spread sheet and there are the thicker barrel ones I don't know who makes them. The C/H would be the same as a 1.7 or 1.8 piston.

I too thought about turning down a 1.8 jrl to 2.0 ltr jrl, I even thought about having it off set ground to 2.0 jrl and bring the stroke down to 61mm. And if I ever come across a counterweighted one I will try it, with around a 105 to 106mm bore, and spin the crap out of it.

The 66mm crank with the 5.160" 2.0 rod will give a 1.98 to 1 rod to stroke ratio.

With the 61mm crank & 2.0 rod it would have a 2.15 rod to stroke ratio

The HD Twincam slugs go for ~$20/4 on Ebay,
(pulls, usually zero miles for guys who want a big bore kit from the dealer)

95.25mm, (EDIT .927 pin), 32.66mm pin height
Available in many oversizes, stock are cast.

Sandeep noticed the WISECO Acura/Nissan 350Z slugs are viable, 95.5/96mm, 10cc dish, 22mm pin , 29.67mm

Also available with a small dome, 7cc, unsure if usable shape, but likely machine flat possible...

Suby STI (2.0) slugs, 92(std)/92.5/93mm, 12cc dish, 32.5 mm pin height, 23mm pin.
(actually dish available in 8.5-~13cc, and ~27cc from various sources)

Note these would fit in bored 1700 jugs/heads fine, and be immensely boostable/revworthy.
(Think T1 rods on 66 crank and beehives...Deck is ~stock)

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Great guys, keep the specs coming. I will also measure the ones I have here and will spend some time at my friends shop looking at many pistons to see what are viable alternatives. I will try to weigh them too!

From WISECO catalog
(These would be turbo pistons for bored 1700cc jugs/head stroker combo)

Starion/Conquest TSI, `84-89, 92/92.5mm, 17cc dish, 35.3mm pin height, 22mm pin

3000GT 91.5/92/92.5, 14cc dish, 31.75 pin height, 22mm pin.

The following would PROBABLY work in bored 1700 jugs, definitely in bored 1800 or newish 2.0 jugs.

`85 4runner 22RE short deck, flat tops
94mm, 34,9mm pin height, 22mm pin
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Correct for the 1.7, but the 1.8 uses the same OD cylinder as the 2.0. So the 1.8 kit's 96mm cylinders are fine.

The 1700/1800 90.5-96mm 66 stroke slugs would be ~Mahle "A" pin height, ~.100" needs trimmed from jugs for a proper deck.

(aircooled.net and likely Jake both provide them pre-trimmed, which justifies the extra cost, don't know if EMW does it... T4Unleashed, can you find out ?)

For reference:
Mahle "A", 39.6mm pin height
Mahle "B" 34mm pin height

Mahle 90.5s and 92s, MAYBE 94s could go in 1700 jugs.
(94s probably NA/No NO2 only, but OTOH, may still be ~ as thick as T1 94s, and they boost the snot out of those...???)

BTW, someone asked can you nitride jugs?
Would you want to???
(Is the alloy nitridable?)

Anyone know where to get 24mm tool steel (or at least lighter weight) pins?

My Cosworths weigh 593g, and probably ~1/3 of that is the tapered (but _really_ thick in the middle) pins.

The latest GM motors (late gen V8s) use 24mm pins, but I have looked hight and low for 24mm pins to no effect.

Porsche 924, 928, 944 & 944 Turbo all had 24mm pins.

SAAB 900 Turbo has 24mm pins.

Toyota 3RZFE 2.7 4-cyl has 24mm pins.

Volvo B20 has 24mm pins.

Now, these pins are probally to heavy, and not the correct length, but don't know for sure untill somone checks them out.

For Tool Steel & light weight in a 24mm pin, one word says it all, Custom.

Hmmm.. Manley has 24mm LS-1 pins in 2.3", but they probably have the material to make longer, I'll have to call them.
(Sent email to sales...)

Manley's not exactly the first place I think of for pistons/pins, but they have a decent selection, including:

Ford 4.6/5.4l engine
90.2208mm (3.552", +.010, +.020") with a 30.988 pin height, .120 tool steel 22mm pin, 2618 forging

11 and 23cc dishes

Manley sells only that length pin, so they don't make them.

Who can do custom piston pins?
