So we all can become involved and share knowledge..
Converting from Generator to Alternator
1-What parts are required?
2-What are the common mistakes?
3-Which alternator do you suggest?
4-Any tricks?
5-Did I miss something?

Tech article
MNAirhead,
I wrote an A-Z with piccies and put it up on AVD a while ago.
I found the main problem is every response I ever read tended to gloss over things a little and ALL the info was from different posts.
Lots of little things like : Some aftermarket Alt stands are crap.
What parts to re-use off the generator
Can I do it all in-situ? Do I have to lift the shroud?
Fuel pumps and rods
Do I grind or do I bend carby linkage?
If anyone is interested :

The server is a POS sometimes and there is some Aus stuff only towards the end.

I never imagined the amount of work it would take to swap a gen for an alt. I am assembling mine with a 12v generator because I wanted to keep the "stock" look (figuring if it can't keep up with the stereo, I'd swap it).
Now I am re-thinking that idea!
So is an alternator that much better than a generator? Gonna go visit that other thread and find out!!

Stuff
MNAirhead,
If you think it's worthwhile then I don't mind at all.
SpeedyJim,
No worries, it was une morceau de pee-pee after tripping
over your site.
Boneloader,
Oh yeah, looks shocking when there's no skipping details! I was concerned with screwing my carb (autostick) at the time which is why I hit the alt with an angle grinder. Also, note I chose to fit a dubious quality bling pulley which caused me lots of angst.
Cost, sound system, ease of replacement were my reasons. I still have my generator/regulator if it claps out.

I've seen carb spacers that appear to raise the carb and/or offset it enough to clear the alternator. Looks like you found a better method to make it work.
Also, does a 12v generator stand also fit an alternator? Is 6v generator smaller in diameter? Just trying to figure out if I need to replace my stand--I have a '67 so I already have 12 volts.
How many watts do you recommend? I see 51, 55, 65, 75, and now even 80 and 95 amps available. Also, is the Bosch alternator the way to go? Reman OK?
Should I get the chrome one? (<--just kidding on that one
)
Thanks!

Mmmm...
Boneloader,
I read somewhere that raising the carb causes the throttle cable to start sawing on the guide tube. There's meat enough in the body to grind, it is just a royal pain to get it "just so". Also, original equipment Alternators are less porky in the body it appears.
You must get an alternator stand, period. The alt stand fits both, not the other way around.
Anecdotal evidence suggests (what I read around forums) that 75's can suffer from quality issues. You must figure out how much load will be on your system, ie heater, hi-beams, spotties and wipers all going whilst blaring out a massive sound system etc. I have a complete lack of the theoretical knowledge required to supply an answer, but as SpeedyJim suggested in the other topic, post up and the gurus can help.
Bosch will be your only choice I believe unless the ACIndustries ones are made in-house. Don't take my word for it though

Mines a reman unit. I would've liked new but beggars can't be choosers.
