Just got back from the bug o rama in irvine

Post by 914fan »

It was fun. there were a lot of cars there. I only found 1 car with a type 4 conversion. This one had a Raby kit with dtm. I spoke with him for a while. Great guy. It happens that the guy was Bill. Bill is the guy who drove with Jake, and created the data logger. Bills bug is awesome. The DTm looks great in person. The web site does not do it justice.
And now for the reason I am posting this. I do not know how many people have heard a RAT with DTM. It is insane. There is NO VALVE NOISE. No tapping, no nothing. period. The exhaust sounds good. I forget what he is running, but I would bet that if you removed the DTM and ran an exhaust away from where you are that the motor ideling would be almost silent. Ofcourse the carbs have that lovely sucking sound, but The motor itself is silent. NO NOISE. NO tapping, squeeking, NOTHING. I am impressed. It is quieter that a new car. When you hear the exhaust is sounds throaty, but not like a bug, OR bus, OR 914, Or anything that you would think. Bill did say he is not running an A1 and that the A1 sounds even better. And now for the DTM. It sounds like a cross between a 911 on high idle, a stock type 4 @ 6000k, and a spooled turbo. It was beautiful. It has that sound at idle. It is very low but when you hit the gas it gets louder. It is not obnoxious. It is this whirring sound that is just WOW.
I wanted to post this to thank Bill for everything he did, and to let everybody know what a dtm sounds like.
That was a great expierance. I have been toying with sourcing parts for my rebuild. After hearing or rather not hearing that motor, there is no way I can ever dream of not buying a kit from Jake.
thank you Bill. I forgot to ask you, but those mirrors are wicked. what are they from?

Glad you were able to meet up with Bill and I'm glad he had a good trip down to the show. Thats the farthest he has driven his car since it was fully rebuilt and thats always a challenge.

People have to experience my work to appreciate it, it's always been like that.

Thanks for the compliments.
