the rear main on a my "temporary" motor is moving back and forth a little behind the flywheel, I'm going to install shims and drive it like it is, the case has been cut to .040, and is at the end of its life, I have heard of others doing this. I wonder how long it will last before it spins off the dowel pin

awe, phuck it I'm going to tear it down and see what can be saved, I'll be looking for a new case possible a new crankshaft.

Yeah, if you shim it given the condition of the thrust bearing in the case you may well bind up the thrust bearing and spin it, thus the end of the crank, case, and possibly the flywheel, and that would suck dude.
if you want a few more miles out of it, use my redneck backyard mechanic trick...
Pin the pulley end of the crank against a wall, or floor (watch for oil spills, lol)
so that the main bearing behind the flywheel gets pushed OUT. You will be able to see the gap between the flange and the case.
Now take a punch and a hammer, and beat the flange in from 5-6 spots all spread out evenly around the circumference of the bearing. The flange will easily bend inwards, taking up the gap. Now the bearing will sit tight again, and there is still enough smooth raised surface on it for the shims to rest against.
Works for a good while. But it's not a real fix. The bearing clearance is most likely too big anyway and that you can't help.
I took the plunge and tore the engine apart last night, & Holy Moley! the thing is shot! Looks like I didn't luck out on the used engine, cams lifters are worn badly, main bearing shells are to the copper, case is pounded out, the wrist pins had to be hammer out of the pistions, etc. looks like the thing had oil starvation or oil boil(over heated) at on time, the heads look like the were replaced at its last rebuild though 040's
I know a guy that may help me do a thrust cut and cut the rear bearing in a lathe so it fits snugly if I use this case again? I think its 1040( this is what is says stamped on the back of the case near the main seal, I'll have to measure.
10 rods? 40 case?
