junkyard turbo wbx update

Post by akciddento »

the buildersvan junkyard turbo project finally ran at bugjam last weekend.

stock 2.1 dj
k-jet injection
tb03 turbo
chargecooler

the engine is a 2nd hand shed find and a little tired but we found about 7lb of boost on the dyno and made 108bhp at the rear wheels, with 100bhp in 2nd gear.

the last weigh in of the bus was at 3030lb with me in the drivers seat..

first run out ran a 17.4 with a 3 second sixty foot. the video i shot from inside the cab shows wheelspin in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.... ideally i'm looking for a 2.1 60ft (or less) which would indicate a low 16/high 15...

sadly some breakages and then a day of torrential rain prevented more qualifying and finally rained off racing completely but i'm very happy so far. the total cost to date (including the bus) is about £450 ($850).

the raceshack boys are looking for 140bhp at the rear wheels when we get it back on the dyno and i've got my Nitrous kit now with 100bhp jets... and theres more metal to chop out so with luck we'll see BIG reductions in 1/4 mile times...

thanks again to www.raceshack.co.uk for dyno tuning, advice and diagnostics. conor and kevo. and dude ellis for the loan of the nitrous kit :)

Yeah!
Cool (very) low buck project. Very inspirational!
Where came the K-jet off? (which car/model?)

Thanks,
Walter

the k-jet is mostly from a saab 900turbo with some bits from a golf gti(mostly the airbox and some pipework...)

the k-jet was pretty painless to install. i thought there would be hassle but it was almost spot on first time... the most boost we've run so far is only 7lb. i'll let you know how it likes more boost.
my friend jamie-fugitive runs this setup and has run much higher boost with no problems...

Indeed I have!

On a fairly low-spec 1835cc Type1

@10psi boost it made 120-125 rwhp @ 4800rpm on the same dyno as above which equated to mid 13sec 1/4s in a sandrail.
However, I also ran it at 15 psi on 110Octane @ 28BTDC with no worries except that it kept breaking R&Ps! Best "calculated" time was a 13.0 but with loads of wheelspin thanks to trying to save the 'box with 185/65R15 radials!

The other problem was that I was into 4th gear well before the 1/8 and hitting the rev-limiter @ 5500rpm well before the stripe fitted with 205/70R15 tyres
