With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

G60 supercharger in 1968 bus

Post by Jacob »

Has anyone got any experience with using the "G-Lader" from VW Corrado/Golf/Passat G60? (I got one cheap.)

As I am on a (very) tight budget, I will most likely buy a sound, used 1835 for the project. I'm quite new to this, so what should I think about when looking for such an engine for supercharging? In terms of compression ratio, cams, heads, pistons, a.s.o. (As I will buy a used engine, it is the general picture - and caveats - that is interesting. I can, regretfully, not control every single component, but I can of course replace a component or two to make it more suitable for 'charging.)

Is a K-Jetronic mechanical injection (from f.ex. Saab 99 EMS) a good choice if I want reliable horsepower and resonable fuel consumption (below 10 l / 100 km on the hiway).

About how much power/torque can I expect from, lets say, a stock 1600, taken up to 1835, original dual port heads, a suitable camshaft, G60 charger, and K-Jetronic?

It will be put in a 1968 bus. Any special complications with supercharging a bus?

Thank you all for your patience with a charger newbie!

I think someone like Moggy or the Supercharger guys who have run the DLI ones would be able to help. Go for it if you can you'll just have to work out the belts and stuff and a blow-off valve I think?

With a second-hand engine you're running the gauntlet regardless...

However, if you're gonna whack a blower on it aswell then any weak areas will soon make themselves heard. You'll have to strip the engine back anyway as you'll have to lower the compression ratio to somewhere around 7-7.5 for a daily driver running approx 6psi boost. So you'll soon be able to see what state it's in then.

As regards to fitting the blower, try to copy the original installation as much as possible i.e. if it has the throttle body before the blower inlet and the injectors between the blower and the heads, copy that.

For pulley ratios/boost calculations you'll have to refer to the manufacturer, or speak to someone into the G60, G40 VW's and find out what boost they normally run, then measure the pulley size of the crank and blower this'll give you the ratio to stick to on your motor to achieve the same boost. The only other thing to consider here is if the original Golf (Rabbit) motor ran an intercooler, if so 2 things

1. You should use an intercooler too. If VW deemed it necessary to use one at that boost level then so should you.

2. There'll be a slight loss of boost due to the interccoler being there i.e. if the original engine had an intercooler and read a boost of 8psi, if you ran the blower on your motor with the same crank to blower pulley ratios then you'd probably see a boost reading of 9-10psi because there's no restrictive intercooler bringing the boost down.

Personaaly I'd intercool it anyway as any increase in heat is a loss in power, but if you're on a budget then try to keep the boost around the 6psi mark.

Stay away from any wild cams and turbo grinds all you need is a mild cam.

Best thing to do regarding engine power estimates is either speak to the manufacturers or to Rabbit/Golf specialists.

I can't comment on K-Jetronic as I've no experience of it. I'm using an aftermarket ECU ( DTA) with Bosch injectors.

Hope this is helpful.

Consider a rebuild for a G-Charger is megabucks and if you aren't bothered then hey just do it!.
K-Jet would be an Ideal solution, far better than carbs

Thanks a lof for the answers! Very helpful, and also inspiring!

The reason why I go for a G60 is simply because I got an OK one very cheap (less than US$100). If it breaks, I'll replace it. With something.

Now I'll just find a K-jetronic and get started...

Again, thanks!
