Harney's diatribe - rocker geometry to install & beyond

Do you like to go fast? Well get out of that stocker and build a hipo motor for your VW. Come here to talk with others who like to drive fast.

John, when I run 55's I can't get the O2 under about 15.5 - 16. You really think I might need to go back to 55's? I'm running the 60's now that I got from you guys.

The 65's I put in while I was waiting for the 60's really woke it up - I can't figure it to be too rich.

It doesn't stall when returning to idle, it stalls out if when I am returning to idle I crack it a little - otherwise it returns to idle perfectly.

I'll add one about your video...Where all the hecklers that were giving you crap about your test stand??? Looked pretty solid to me with a running motor on it. Tim

Good thing. I'd hate to think I spent all those years in college getting that engineering degree to fail building an engine stand. Thanks Tim.

I still think the linkage is out of sinc from what I can hear and what you have described. That or a vacuum leak or a mix adjustment on one side.I'm probably out to lunch though.

do not pay too much attention to the O2 readings. It is completely normal for the A/F to go way lean/rich when you crack the throttle. IMO you are doing too much tuning on the stand, and need to get on with tuning in the car.

I think you need what I said you needed before, which is 60 idles.

I know. I'm not really trying to tune it out on the stand but the basic throttle response I can judge somewhat from here. The O2 readings I am referring to are steady state idle only. I am not paying attention to them off idle. I should be able to get it so that cracking the throttle gives crisper response than it is now. I think it's probably timing and accelerator pump, mostly at this point, MAYBE different idle jets.

Anyway, I got it mostly worked out now and it's going in the car soon. Just have to juggle everything until I can get to it. Life gets in between me and that thing quite often.

I want you guys to know I really appreciate your help. I should be in bed, but my daughter woke up from a bad dream. 3 year olds have quite the imagination.

i'm with john on the tuning thing. when i finished built my last engine, i broke it in the way the carb was originally setup. then afterwards i did a lot of tuning with the car in my garage with my A/F gauge. i got it running great. was very responsive.....it sounded like a beast. it had a nice steady and smooth idle.

......i went to take it for its maden voyage around the neighborhood.......it barely made it down my alley it was so lean. it was jerking like crazy. damn near gave me whiplash

so basically what i'm getting at.......is that its gonna run WAY different under load.

get in the thing and drive it

same here... only thing different is that I'm on PEFI..so I have like 50-60 or more "jet sites + acceleration this and that" at my disposal (and it gets too darn confusing :? ) throw in the timing #'s too and its like I'm just fishing all over the graph.. but I had it super smooth idle/rapid thr response/revs/WBO2 readings etc in the garage..went for the lean crisp effect...well 1st time on the road it was just like "purple69" flat spots all over the place. I was praying to make it back home with the engine just farting and coughing around the block! it was a JOKE!

The current maps are nothing like from what I used for the 1st garage mapping (or what I logically THOUGHT would work, ha!)..

Looking good man! It sounds a lot like my squishy motor. My dynagear gears are a lot quieter, and my exhaust is deeper (straight through dynomax magnum). You need to get it in the car and get the rings broken in and sealed up. Then you can start really tuning it.

What do you have your timing at?

Where did you go to school?

How do you know when/how to adjust your accelerator pump?

Thanks,

Its funny how much bigger the Idel jets end up being than what the "people" suggest

you do have a "miss or bog", I watched the video, hope you can work it out
I wish I knew the answer, I do know my carbs have the accerator pump nuts tightened all the way down.

Steve,

I agree, I need to get it in the car. Been so long since I did work on a new build, (three years or so now) I forget about reality.

Those are magnums in there, I don't mind the noise.. I like it. At least I do for now.

I went to school in Stillwater, OK, at Oklahoma State University. Graduated 1994 BSEE, wife graduated 1995 BSChE (chemical engineer), and we're here in Wichita while she gets finised with her residency in Radiology. Gone by middle of June! 8)

I never told him to use 55s, I told him to use 60s from the outset. I have no idea who said 55s on 48 IDFs, but it wasn't me!

I don't think he meant to say you suggested those. I think he meant people in general. After all, if he read what you wrote, you said clearly that you initially suggested 60s.

Soon!!
