My first car was a 72 VW 411, four door. Other than a brief two year stint in a chevy....I have never not owned at least one type 4. Ray

Good topic. I've been driving my 1911 T4 for about 8K miles. I really like it. As some of you know I had gone from the T4 back to the T1 with a turbo.

Here are the reasons that I had for going back to the T1:

*Lack of practical exhaust choices; too costly, and lack of heater boxes.
*Cheaper to build HP. I added a turbo because I've always like them, and the T1 market caters to those of us with the need for boost.
*Pricey T4 Performance heads

Potentially the T4 has a greater up side such as:

*Cooler running
*Natural torque
*Stronger cases by design
*Potential for BIG DISPLACEMENT

That being said, I'll be re-building my T1 turbo for my daily driver. I love the rush that the turbo gives my car. And I can have heater boxes. High HP numbers can be achieved relatively easy, and for not a lot of $$.

My Oval will get a 2600 T4 Turbo if things work out. I like building cars that are different. This will be a street/strip car.

I know that if Jake continues to get the right people behind his efforts, the T4 industry will take it's rightful place in the performance market. If the costs are a little more reasonable, it'll be a great option.

Take care,

Eddie.

I see nothing in the future for T1, and the future for T4 is all good, but there are 2 things that worry me:

1. The cores will run out.... I am starting to find it's hard to get them here in New Zealand now!!!

2. When every body gets a T4 powered car, it will be harder to beat them.

There must be a way to have a properly functioning exhaust exit through a stock apron.

I know function is more important than form, but they don't have to be mutually exclusive. It seems silly to me to spend thousands of dollars only to have the only visible portion hang low, or stick way out, and look as much as an afterthought as it does aftermarket.

There is a picture of a BAS exhaust for Type 4 engines exiting a standard Beetle's apron in Keith Seume's Custom VWs book, but I have never seen it available. It seems intuitive to me that whatever can be accomplished functionality-wise in the back of a standard or Super can also be accomplished with a stock apron given the equidistant nature of the stock cut-outs.

Lee from LA Performance is sending me one of his arrangements to test during the exhaust testing....

The last one I used did ok on the dyno, but I never compared it directly like this test will be..

As a new comer to the Type 4 scene, I'm very excited about the lower costs and "kits" coming out in 2005. I spoke with Jake via email the other day about viewing the Type 4 Bug Me video. I'm eager to learn more, and soon use a Type 4 motor in my next project car!

I would love to use a Type 4 motor in my current Super project, but it's going to be my daily driver and I need my heater here in Tahoe.

Yes, samcat, I saw both.

The LA Performance looks good, but when I asked whether that black apron was stock or special, that answer was omitted. (My e-mail had 3-4 other questions which were answered.) Do you know whether that apron is stock?

The other is a beauty (I posted two thumbs up), but a one-off. It is way beyond my capabilities.

I never found the BAS model pictured in Seume's book.

I hope the LA Performance one would work. My GL future is looking bright. Minor Project #1 is done. I've ordered everything for Major Project #1. That should arrive in a week. I have the money already for Major #2 and the parts for Minor #2. The drivetrain is Major #4. I'm very excited.

Yesterday,
I met an individual (who Jake and Charles know) and boy, I can tell you, what he showed me really impressed me! I might be helping this gent get some added CNC machinery up and running and hopefully be able to help our scene with availability and pricing regarding this product. I've also been talking with Adam Wik who also resides in my corner of the woods regarding some parts

I plan to in this year to put a Type 4 into my Speedster replica and one of Jake's combos with most possibly one of his DTM shrouds into my early 912. I have amde a contact with another individual who can gear the early 901 transaxles to effectively use the Type 4 powerband and lower RPM characteristics. I want to come up with proven combos that will function well for my two cars. I do have some good friends that have some excellent machine shops and metal fab shops and I might be able to make available some 356/912 specific conversion parts like exhaust, engine hangers, cooling parts, transaxles, and speedter replica components. My friends at Renegade Hybrids have also gave me some good contacts for some things (althought, I do not specifically yet agree with slappin' a V8 into my 912's rear! :x ). But there is a possibility of getting some conversion items made by one of their suppliers.

I do hope that the lifter problem is solved because everyone I talk to is pretty much turned off when they look at the current prices of some Type 4 stuff. I personally think that it is not tha bad but some of the items could use some more attractive pricing....which of course is driven my demand, availability, and supply. :(

I hope I am not dreaming but I have to do something soon, cause, being an engineer, my mind never stops working! Jake, Tuna, Joe, and my contacts will be invaluable with regard to my plans if I so choose to go through with them. :?
