just a few dumb ass questions about rings and shrouds and st

Post by pantswagen »

do i have to machine my ring to 260mm?

does an original strap -911 when cut and bolted to the dissy clamp and the other half bolted to the case bolt, - work?

do i leave off the inner deflector that sits on the back of the fan, or just trim it to fit inside?

can i take the crank case vent from the dipstick tube, and go with out one?
will i then need to vent at the rockers?

228mm pressure plates, do they just foul on the springs that stick out?, can i just grind them a bit rather than the trans?

what holds the shroud to the engine - surely it cant be just the 2 bolts on the ring?

any advise gladly received

and thank you!

I can't help you with the 911 shroud, but I have done the 228 > T1 flywheel thing.

The pressure plate and (for lack of a better word) "wings" that clamp the belleville spring are what interfere. Do NOT grind the PP, madness lies there. (balance etc)

I saw a great idea the other week on the net, the fellow said that if you machine 2mm off the PP mounting surface, and a matching 2mm off the clutch face, it almost drops in, at least a LOT easier.
Any place that rebuilds flywheels could do this for you.

For a trans hogging tool, a ~2-3in hole saw with the drill bit removed works well.

I also suggest a vanagon flywheel. (forged)

You will also need a late T4 or 914 self supporting starter, and to make a 1/2" "ring" plate as a spacer for the starter.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

the starter thing has got me???
if i instal a 210 flywheel, can i use a stock bug starter?
what is meant by self supporting?
is it like a bay window where the pinion is 5mm longer?

and lastly is a 228 and a 210 flywheel basically the same
ie position in trans?

The T1 automatic transmission used a self supporting starter and believe it can be used. Think the teeth on the 914 flywheel are too far forward for it to work.

The self supporting shaft starters are used on automatics, 914s, and late busses/vanagons.

These are identifiable on sight, as they just have a gear on the end, with no extra support shaft that slides into the bushing in the trans.

The also have a built in one way clutch, not externally visible.

They have a bearing IN the body of the starter.

You need the SPECIFIC ones for the 914 and late busses to clear the 228, and the spacer, they have more throw vs the T1/T3 .

The T1/T3 auto starter is a slightly higher output starter vs the std T1, amd will work fine in a manual box.

On a `71 up trans, the bus 210/215 will just work, with the addition of the center input shaft bearing installed in the flywheel---The one in the crank *Must Come Out* to make room for clearance of the one in the flywheel. Use a BUG starter, either type with these, no spacer.

...Thick side of the bearing *with the part# OUT, flush with the flywheel surface.

The 914 one IS too deep as to the ring gear. Have the ring gear machined back, it MIGHT work, IIRC the pressure plate is in about the right place. Jake will know, he has posted on this.

The 228 and 210/215 bus/vanagon ring gears are all effectively in the same place. To clear the 228 PRESSURE PLATE you need the spacer and the extra throw .
Compare all the measurements to a Bus tranny and it works out.

Any of the T4 flywheels will work in a 901/914 trans with the center bearing mod.(and a 914/late bus/vanagon starter)
