rotary VS Subaru??

Are you one of those confused people who can't make up their mind?

rotary beetle

Post by james1978 »

defo the way id go,

no pistons, cam, valves, rockers to slow it down

no cam belt to snap

a lightly tuned and ported na 13b, will produce the same hp as a standard turbo, and more if you know what your doing, and be twice as reliable!

as for the sound, that rotory whine at 8000 rpm, cant beet it :D

and as for the exhaust note- sounds like a jet plane

check that out for all you need to know about any engine conversions in you bug :D

why not go a series 4 13bt. EFi, 189hp stock form (at flywheel), remove AC, power steering .etc and u got a bit more. these are the ones with the decompressed rotors. can run upto i think it is 12psi boost on standard ecu. get a diff ecu, t04 turbo upgrade, external wastegate and your making close on 300-350hp at the wheels. rotors can handle the boost.

and as for the torque factor. there is a Kombi over here in australia with a 13bt in it that makes close on 400hp at the rear wheels and produces over 500nm of torque.

it can send the kombi to 13 second 1/4 mile passes. imagine that power in a bug. absolutely insane.

in my opinion, in a lightweight street car like a beetle the 13bt can provide sufficient torque. and can be very quick. also. nothing like hearing it redline at 9000rpm then letting off boost :).

And if you are worried about the 2 stroke noise then do as others have said. get a pre silencer .etc.

this is the reason i am wanting to go rotary in my bug. (i would only go 13b though because of refinement). the only thing that will make me go ej20t is if the 13bt is illegal over here.

Just my opinion. any differing ones be sure to post.

I'd like to put a 13b into my Ghia but infortunately, I don't want to go with fuel injection. I'm not the biggest fan of it. Granted, it would be a lot more reliable and more ecconomic but frankly, I don't like computers in my toys. You seem to be pretty good with rotaries. What engine do you suggest for more power, reliablity and all that good stuff but is still carburated? I'm going to go with a shortened 4th gear as I've heard that its basically useless when coupelted on a rotary engine. And btw, I'd rather do a rotary then an subaru engine. Subaru would be just as fun, but a lot of hacking to make the thing fit. I think I might throw an ej20 onto my sandrail though. That or a fair sized V6.

if you dont want fuel injected then i imagine the easiest option would be to go a 12a rotary instead. talk to Zenjoe about this as he has done this exact conversion. a carby fed N/A 12a rotary. and apparently it goes like the clappers too..

Man Ill never understand this. You go through all the trouble of putting a newer engine in. Figure out all the wiring for a carb and most likely the rotart has a electronic carb. You go through all that work to get a hi-tech engine when with just alittle more research and time you could of done things way better. Just give the efi a chance.

I completely agree. One of the main reasons I'm doing my swap is to get away from ancient technology (IE carbs). While the wiring might be somewhat complex, it can be done and is well worth the time invested. My only one problem with the suby setup is that no one has come out with anything cool to crack the code such as uberdata for honda or dsm link. I guess I'm going to have to piggy back untill I can affort a good stand alone... Just my 2 cents

yeah i agree also i was just saying what i thought he wanted.

new technology is obviously better, one of the reasons i want to do a conversion aswell.

but if you really do want carby fed then it can be done. but why?

just have it off the road for an extra week and sort out the wiring. its much better.

I am installing a 13b with a supercharger and a holley 650 with mechanical secondaries. efi will be a good choice too, just need to install a computer.

why dont u just buy a series 4/5 13bturbo front cut, includes a gearbox u can sell off, the power steering stuff to sell, the brakes (can be sold or used), the dash, the bonnet. to make some money back on it. and use the standard ecu and loom. (costs $2500 australian) so u should be able to get cheaper over there.

The 12A doesn't use an electronic carb(exept for the choke of course). I also dissagree with miller who said they are easy on transmissions. Even with RX7s racers who tune their engines above 10,000 rpm often use a,"ballistic blanket" around the tranny to catch any parts that fly out of the tranny when it fails. I kinda wonder what a sustained 7,000 rpms might do to a vw tranny designed for about 4,000 rpms. (Yes I know VW over-engineered their aircooled trannys)

i thought the vw tranny was only good to 8K rpms anyways

Truth is, I've never worked with fuel injection. Sure, I've done simple stuff to them but nothing involving the whole computer system. I know it would be better in just about everywhere, but call me an oldie if you want. I would also not mind doing an the subaru engine but I really think thats too much power for the result I want. Ofcourse, I might dump the project, sell my Ghia and go to what I'm used to and love soooo much. 500 cubic inch beast, topped with dual carbs, super charged, and can't forget the hemi heads along with the most aggresive cam in the world eating gallons of aviation fuel. I've been inching to build a Dodge Charger for quite sometime now. My Nova isn't much fun anymore. Best time I put down in it was 11.7. To much horsepower out of the 454 in it. Broke engine mounts on launches so I chained it to the frame rails. Not to uncommon though, but I just felt really proud of it when I had to do that ^_^ Anyone got an impressive speading ticket? I got one doing 161 in my toy when I was 25. My choices were get my car impounded and loose my license for 2 years, go to jail for 2 monthes and loose my license for a year, or pay the $850 ticket and move out of the state. Any option, it was $850 and the sentence. I moved to Idaho for a couple years with a buddy of mine. I've had to park it for in total about 8 monthes because I've out ran cops in it and had to hide it so no one called my plates. Don't do anything like that now. I was a stupid kid... Lucky I didn't get killed.... But anyway, if I build a Charger, it would probably be a complete strip car. Not street for that beast...
