cleaning engine

Post by mrgizmow »

low oil pressure suggests that it is time to remove the engine that is currently in my Baja Bug. I have a spare that I picked up at a local wrecking yard. It seemed to start and run ok, but when I removed the stock oil pump to replace it with a larger unit to push the oil up into the extra cooler (for those hot N. Calif. days in the mountains) I noticed that the inside (timming gear) looked pretty gunky. I do not expect the engine will be used more than a few months, but it still bothers me to fire it up knowing it looks this crudy inside. Before install, I was thinking of sloshing a couple of gallons of solvent in the block a few times to rinse the bulk of this stuff out, then running the clean oil thru the inline filter. Do you think this would cause more harm than good. Any suggestion........... ? Thanks, Gerry

Is your filter right off of the pump cover? If so, go for it.
(If your filter is plumbed to the stock cooler passages on top of the block it isn't truly full-flow and when the oil's cold it'll bypass the filter).

Thanks Marc:

Solvent is sloshing around inside the case as I write. I do have a full flow, drilled and tapped a couple of days ago. I will flush with deisel a couple of times and then add a cleaner to some 30 weight oil. Given this day and age, I was surprised at the muck that appeared built up on the inside stuff I could see (timming gear). It kind of reminded me of those days when folks only had non-detergent oil. It is hard to imagine that anyone would have been running this stuff for 40 years. I hope it runs through the summer.
Thanks again....... if anyone else has any advice on flushing the inside of an engine,,,, I'm interested in hearing......... Gerry
