It's back !!! Miss under power.

Post by BlueBus »

 I had two days without the missing under power problem after I replaced the distributor cap. Now it's doing it again but only after it warms up. Any more ideas ?
Thanks. GR

A really tough problem with ignition, after warming up, may be due to a failing coil. Does it run right momentarily after you let it sit for a while?
I even had a new coil acting up once current warmed the thing! Try another just for grins.

Don't forget what I mentioned about the coil and the resistance with the pointless ignition system. But with the warmth being an issue the previous post may be right on the money.

The coil was my next choice. I'll try it today.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it works.

Check also your rotor resistance if it is OEM and check your spark plug connectors if they are OEM. Rotor should be 5-10k Ohms connectors should be 1-5 K Ohms. These resistors can change under temperature.

Put a Compu-fire coil in yesterday. It seems to be running good. I'm going to drive into Portland today. That should be a good test for it.

It's still doing it !!!!! :( If you get on the gas real heavy it doesn't do it. It's just when you give it a little. It's not like a miss. More like a hic-up. Could it be the vacume advance ?

Just so happens my bus decided to start this crap. I haven't had any garage time yet due to work and the family to see whats wrong. I replaced my points with pertronix and a new blue coil about 2 months ago. The old coil worked fine when I switched them so I will try th old one to see if this fixes it.

If you gurus have anymore suggestions, please put them out there.

If you fix your problem bluebus please post it.

Also new plugs and wires at the same time of the other stuff. Its just all of a sudden it started sputtering when I give it a lil gas. It runs fine when I'm cruizing at 70 to 75, but when I let up and just give it a lil gas it sputters. Also when comming out of the gears with just a lil gas. But it seems to run better when I hammer down on her.

Is your compufire new? You might throw the old points in and see if the unit is not working correctly. I had a similar problem on an old dodge slant six with a pertronix, and the petronix unit was the problem. Check your overall timing at 3500 rpm, then plug the vacuum line from the distributor and check to the timing range again to make sure the vacuum is working on your distributor. How do your plugs look? Also make sure your valves are set up correctly.

Alright, here goes. I replaced the rotor and cap. I replaced the wires with new bosch wires. Checked the timming and everything is working good in the vaccum advace dizzy. Put the old coil I had still laying around back on. I did all these one at a time to see if I could figure this out. I thought I had it with the wires, but then it started doing it again. It dosen't do it all the time. sometimes It will be running fine and the next minute it will start to hic-up when I give it just a lil gas. The only thing left is the spark plugs and those are only 1month old. SO I don't think it is that. The only thing I can think of is the pertronix unit. So I guess I will have to go buy some points and all and see if this fixes the problem. Man it will piss me off if I spent the money on that pertronix and it craps out in only 4 months.
Bluebus; you had any luck with yours>

:D Sounds just like mine. I'm running the petronix with a compu-fire coil. Haven't had time to check anything since my last post, I've been on vacation.

A couple more thoughts:
-A new plug CAN be bad just like a new coil. Rare, but it happens.
-How about a worn distributor / shaft?
Tough one. Good luck!

this exact thing is happening to me right now! i have a 1835 w/ a progressive carb. my double cab had an extremely rusty gas tank so that was changed first (w/ fuel lines). then i re-jetted the carb and that helped until it warms up! it only happens in higher RPMs and 3rd gear. oh yeah, i still have the reduction gears in it. everything on the engine is new (less than 100 miles) except the coil. i guess i'll try that next.

I replaced the pertronix with points and it got worse. I have replaced everything except the plugs. When I get the chance I will probobly put the old ones back in one at a time and see if that helps.

Everything new/
cap
rotor
wires
point
condenser
coil

I have been looking for a air leak as well due to it being fuel injected 2.0L. I have yet to fix this problem. I will check the plugs next and see if that helps. Pissing me off man!!!!!
