Trying to get around to doing a volvo swap myself, a b23 onto a bus tranny for a buggy, I just want big torque for off road. Main issues I'm finding are the adapter - commercially unavailable as far as I know, and the clutch/starter issues. Basically I'm up to an engine sitting near a tranny on the floor, I'll drag them closer together soon and see if they want to get together...... I've had a wasserboxer fitted in the past so all the wet bits are ready fitted.

The b21 & b23 are a good bit heavier than a bug engine - don't know the figures but I can lift a bug engine, volvo needs a crane = heavy  this will undoubtably effect the handling negatively. Maybe mid mount it? Then if your doing all that you might as well fit a V70R engine.....

BTW do you know of any good Volvo tuning sites with english translation, or in Swedish and I'll use the Babelfish.

the top of the line tuner in sweden (for volvos) is http://www.kgtrimning.com/
just take the prices an divide by dollar value = 7,06

and KEP makes conv kits but there expensive about 650$

in sweden in scrapcarraces you can buy an convplate (same as Kep)
but you dont get no clutch or flywheel so thats something you haveto
work out yourself but its less expensive 200-240$

I found one who makes them on order 240$ if your want one
pm me dont forget that s&h makes i a bit more!

picture here http://www.home.no/vatten-kylning/wvvolvo.jpg

And a rearmounted volvo engine makes the car lift very easy
in sweden this is a common conv and our trick is to putt 120lbs of
lead or something heavy in the front of the car but then you gain weight and performance drops and engineconv feels unnecessary but for dragracing is this conv perfect

on a racetrack the only option is to midmount the engine but i wanted to ask maybe someon had a solution to this problem so i dont have to spend monay and time to midmount

if you need a adapter to put the volvo engine in a Vw you can find it at this adress..http://come.to/nyronen ..i´m putting a Volvo B20 engine in my notchback and picked up my flywheel today at Reijo´s place  now i´m just waiting for my new clutch..the adapter that he makes you just give 1.350 swedish kronor for..and then you use the standard volvo clutch and starter..http://www.marty.nu/nyronen/ockelboadaptern.gif ..if you need more info just let me know..

This is TIMBERWOLF again, ####ing log in..... I've looked briefly at the site and I think I'm interested but don't have time to babelfish it so i can understand it. I'll maybe email him, I don't have the conversions to hand to take krona to pounds either... what is 1.350 k in pounds £ sterling anybody?

Today I saw a 16v version of the b23 in a scrap yard the guy reckoned it was a very good motor ( wouldn't break it for parts). Is this engine a worth while up grade on the 8v. Seems Volvo went to the 5cyl pretty soon after this 'inprovement' why wasn't it popular?

1350 swedish kronor is about 100 £...not too expensive  ..how much the post and packaging to england is i don´t know.the adapter don´t weigh too much so it wouldn´t be too bad i think..[/quote]

After your post, I went straight back to the site!!!!!! :D Thats a good price! Hell, it won't be more than £20-30 to mail the part. By your previous post does everything else go on easily... clutch and starter are still volvo? output shaft pilot bearing in the flywheel? are there any unseen modifications to do to the vw bell housing etc? This is looking like a piece of cake compared to some conversions,

sorry about all the questions... I was quietly dreading the task of getting the tranny and engine to mate up, now I'm excited again!

20->30£ will be enough for the mail i suppose :P the clutch and the starter is still Volvo..i will take some pics when i start to put the things together..you get another thing with the adapter to put the gearbox shaft in so to say..i will take some pics of it tomorrow for you..i have it down the basement..i will take some pics of the modified flywheel for the B20 engine aswell..it´s the same thing with the B21 and b23 aswell..no modifications of the Vw bell housing is nessessary...

I'm really pleased about this thread, thanks alot for posting Slim... :D
I'll wait on the photo's, but is sounds like I will need to replace the pilot bearing in the middle of the flywheel. I'll email the company tonight.

Howdy Slim,
It was interesting to see the volvo flywheel and the adapter plate,
using the Volvo flywheel sounds pretty good as the Volvo starter is quite a bit more heavy duty than the VW.

We have the Kennedy adapter plate and flywheel-
With the VW flywheel modified to take the Volvo center and we used the auto transmission VW starter motor.
You got to love that torque and the HEAT that the Volvo motor puts out.

good luck with your conversion Timberwolf

I'm really sorry to have hijacked your post Slim, but you are a gentleman and a scholar for taking the photo's! I'm emailing the seller next....

Back to your original question...If your drag racing the engine weight will be useful for transfer and traction, also it is a strong unit and good to tune, got to be cheaper than trying to get the same hp out of a AC VW. If your into the twisty stuff you'll need to do some thing about the weight bias, Porsche have been toying around with this one for 40+ years.... add weight to the front, move the battery etc to the front, if it's irs you could put on 3x2 trailing arms (see the off road forum), move the wings back and there fore extend the wheel base and track (porsche did this in the 911). hope this is of use!
