Chromoly pushrods for an otherwise stock 2.0?

Post by Alpine »

Is it a good idea to replace the stock pushrods with these when I rebuild the 2.0 from my 914?

Think weight and the answer should be given.....

The Chromolys we run are as light as stock PRs and allow you to set the valves at zero lash- really easy and not much louder than aluminum..

Jake, do you recommend the 3/8" MANTON Chromoly pushrods that aircooled.net sells? If so, I would need the "straight" pushrods for my 914 2.0, right?

Manton are ALL that I use... I helped John get the deal with them to sell their pushrods... They are the same ones I use in my engines.

Jake, you wrote in another post http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... ght=manton "If the cam is stock and the engine is unaltered (very rare) you can run stock pushrods. Otherwise the valvetrain geometry will be wacked out." Does that mean that I have to have the Mantons cut to the right length? With the Mantons, is the valve adjusting procedure similar to when using the stock pushrods? Adjust lash to zero every 6000 miles or 6 months? Thanks.

If ANYTHING has changed with the engines dimensions (cam base circle, pushrod cup heaight, lifters resurfaced, cylinders shimmed, heads surfaced) you will not be able to attain proper valvetrain geometry with stockers 80% of the time.....

You'll see when you do it- All the research in the world won't turn the wrench for you.

Thanks for the info, Jake. I guess I'll be buying an adjustable pushrod first.

Many adjustable pushrods do not have the same tip radius as a Manton. If they don't the geometry is almost worthless. I suggest bying an extra manton and using it for a tool...I have yet to find an adjustable rod the works with the mantons 100%

we bought adj PRs until we saw how they are made (horrible). Now, we take stock pushrods and modify them OURSELVES for our adj PRs to ensure this doesn't happen. I know exactly what Jake is talking about.

Are your adjustable pushrods suitable for determining the length of the (Manton) chromoly pushrods I would need?

yes, as long as the tip radius is correct you are golden.

The tip has everything to do with your measurements...
