thanks for the quick reply Jake! i'm running a reversed T1 alternator in mine. with the ever so slight changes you made in the T1 DTM shroud, and the effects they had, i wonder if the shape of the T1 alternator will cause some of the deflection of air you were talking about when thinking of a 'deflector' inside the shroud? with the alternator in reversed it is almost like a mild cone shape. i haven't given up hope yet, just trying to think of changes that get it to work. how many gallons of fuel are you up to now?

Jake, maybe I've missed mention of this, but what about the type 3 " cool tins" that are promoted and used so much for type 1 engines? Do they truly make the type 1 run warmer- than the std. type1- like I've heard lately; which one is the best to use for proper air distribution and cooling? Hey- awesome testing you've got going on!!!

I hope so. OTOH, the same market pressures apply to Ultra VW as to the two domestics.MASSIVE TYPE IV wrote:I hope to be eating my words as well..... I can already see that the Brits might just be the answer to getting accurate data out to the public!
My fear is that the all-important detailed data may not make it past the editorial process and that you may find yourself legally limitted as to what you can publish on your own.
The immediate effect has been that you have stopped posting the data here. And yes, I understand why.
... and since we spake of Bob Hoover:

You might ask him why he stopped writing articles for VWTrends. An interesting answer, that.

Jake-what are the specs on your type 1 test engine?
I know that it was a 2165 with 40x35.5 heads done by DRD.
I was wondering:
1. what cam was used?
2.what was the compression set at-what deck height and combustion chamber measurement?
3. what carbs were used and what were the venturi size and jet sizes?
4. What ignition was used and what was the timing set at?
5. What exhaust/muffler was used?
I assume that all of these are connstants and you just changed the cooling system used for your test.
Thanks-just curious.

Max, fortunately we do not believe in slavery over here.Max Welton wrote:I hope so. Paul has been a great source of tech info in the past for many of us Brits and ULTRAVW is a great new mag. I can't wait to see the full results in print, although its great following your progress here.
Jake - I've seen you post a couple of times on our volkszone forum - 'tis a shame our Mech/Tech isn't quite up to the level of STF....

Concerning obligations to the magazine:
I will not post any comparative data here or on my site until it has been published- thats out of respect. No one directed me to do that. This is MY test, so I'll be the one making the decisions about what gets printed- else no one will get the data. Paul has been very interested in what we are doing, and he is the EDITOR. With the dta plots there is hardly any way to edit them and even have a comparative test to publish. atleast the best graph from each system MUST be presented with a brief description of the test and a summary of the findings in text. Thats what we'll be doing.
The nice thing about them being in England is that they are no where near as influenced by the same advertisers that the domestic magazines are. We will not be mentioning the names of the systems in teh article, just their style of cooling and perhaps a picture of the system- the reader can put whatever name with the system that he desires...
Paul came to ME- I did not go to him. He can see that this information can put his publication ahead of most because its real time stuff. Not a fairy tale... I like the european magazines much better because their stories look "Real" for instance you don't see some guy wearing a brand new set of "Mechanix gloves" holding a screwdriver trying to tune a carb- in a dyno cell thats spotless (Spotless dyno cells don't exist, engines puke oil and catch on fire inside them) I know that domestic guys sit here and read my post. There are a few of them (maybe 3 of them) that are honest, to the point guys the others I don't care for at all. I don't play their political kiss ass game- and they don't like that! Some of us don't need full page ads and interviews to stay busy.
The domestic guys are all about an image- I hate that crap! My image is reality. Some of the cooling systems I tested were not painted, much less shiny powdercoat. These guys portray a fairy tale image that is not only inaccurate, but simply don't exist! when you look at the European mags, the cars are clean, but they look real... tad bit of oil on the engine, some dust, etc......
Thats why I think this will make for a good series of articles- its real, it looks real and it will really be explained with hard raw facts.
The first testing that will get covered is the TIV DTM, all that work is done and almoost summarized. Then after my next attempt with the TI DTM we'll do the TI tests... So we have plenty of time for good stories.
After the information is published I'll put it on my sites...... The data belongs to me, and will stay that way- its cost me 5500 bucks so far- its not for sale, just for share

Don't forget to copyright your info. and file a patent(s) on the dtm.....got a patent atty?....the walls have ears, Jake.
So, can you give us a recap of the T1 shroud results. Are you making progress towards a product that we will want to buy for our T1's?
The politics of business are really pretty simple. If you want insight into a persons motivation, just look at their paycheck.....and/or make a note of the advertisers in rags.....
