Flycut Depth

Post by Guest »

I know this question has been ask in many different ways before and I know every head is different. But, in general terms about what is the most you can safely figure to remove from a stock 2 liter head that has never been flycut? I have seen that the factory spec for the depth of the cylinder spigot the best I remember it is 0.212 to 0.255. If you are within the spec range, could you safely take 0.040 or more off?

flycut depth

If the head has never been flycut .040 will be okay. But that's about all I'd take off. With mods. that involve welding and a step cut we can about double that. I've heard of folks going well past .040, but I've cut these heads apart and I gotta say they get pretty thin where the exhaust studs are machined under the deck. Add to that any casting inconsistencies and you could have some cylinder sealing problems as heat in this area becomes an issue. Are you feeling lucky? I've always been pretty conservative wtih regard to flycutting depth as I'm more concerned with reliability than getting the compression up another half point, and I rarely feel lucky.

I have blown holes through the chambers and into exhaust stud bosses, don't go too far or the same can happen to you..
