So I understand balanced, but what is blueprinted?

Checking every dimension and performing corrective machinework if necessary. The stuff that is done routinely on any proper ACVW rebuild would qualify as "blueprinting" to the the average Detroit-iron mechanic

I was just thinking about this the other day. What is it about rebuilding an ACVW engine that is so much more complex than a V8?(I have no experience from either, so I have no idea) I was thinking about "blueprinting" in terms of having your oil pump blueprinted a la How to Hotrod VW Engines, or Berg sells blueprinted oil pumps.

Any hi-po VW motor needs to be properly balanced and blueprinted.. Port matching for instance, I would put that in the blueprint block. Basically with a big V8, you can buy the stuff and bolt it all together and make 450 hp easily... A 2L VW motor needs to be ported, balanced, weight matched, and on and on in order to reliably make 175 flywheel horsepower... Power is heat, and aircooled VW motors are not designed for the heat generated now adays... I personally think VW people in general are just thorough and detail adressing people

bottom line .... it takes skill , cleanliness , knowledge , etc., etc , to correctly blueprint any engine from a rotary to a bbc to a briggs & stratton.....garbage in gets you garbage back out

Most V8 guys building a motor for their "street/strip" cars don't usually have ported heads, balanced rotating assembly, etc...

I built my 350 HP Chevy engine for my tow vehicle in 8 hours to the longblock point.....

They are so simple compared to the little complex engine we have to fiddle with in the ACVW world.... half as many settings and 2 degrees of timing doens't mean 30 degree hotter head temps.....

Hell I have never put a timing light on my chevy, just set it by ear.., That was 65K miles ago... It pulls low 14s in the qtr and has 4:11 gearing for towing!

hey dudes...
1st of all , i dont need to tel some people what an engine blueprint job entails ....
many v8 builders go to great lengths to hipo their motors . not just nascar or nhra or ihra or scca builders , but pretty normal ppl, just like alot of us.most ppl dont have the full boat machine shop in their backyard , but , they might have access to facilities to get this stuff done.
when ppl just assume that v8 guys dont have as much to do when blueprinting their motor , they are just plain wrong. to get it right , you have to do the same amount of work , other than splitting the damn case . again garbage in , garbage out .if you want an assembled motor just buy the damn motor . you got the dough youll be haPPY.

factory specs allow a range of dimensions. Blueprinting means you set each part dimension/clearance to a specific number. Blueprinting can mean setting the engine to stock or to some other hipo design. The idea being to make the engine as efficient as possible with a given design. That being said, aircooled motors are cranky about their settings.

Incidentally: how much work/consideration is usually given to squish clearance in a VW engine build? I know it's extremely important, but I don't know how good the stock engine setup is. My only knowledge about aircooled motors comes from aircooled two stroke motorcycle engines.
