Who makes the best barrel shims?

Need either 0.010 or 0.020. Talked to John at AirCooled.Net and he says most of the packaged shims he has seen are hit-or-miss on thickness.

Can anyone recommend any brand or should I go to RIMCO and get a set blanchard ground?

RiMCo is a sure fire way to have them all even.

The motor I just finished, I used the ones here at AC.Net, and they all measued out to .040" like they should have. I tried a set of .030" before that, they they were right. They're stamped out, so you have dress the edges of them so they lay perfectly flat.

Hey Bill, I think we're going to break my motor in at the next club meeting. I just have to bolt the sump on, and run the wiring for it. Bring earplugs, that 3" magnaflo isn't going to muffle much!

Eric,

John mentioned that the shims needed dressing to lay flat. Might be ok with the thicker ones but I am concerned about the thin ones I need.

If you don't mind, send me an email with your motor spec's and I'll place a notice in the Dec newsletter letting everyone know of the upcoming birth at the meeting.

Talking about birth - has the latest member of the ACN family arrived?

Ground spacers are certainly better than stamped shims even just for the better sealing surface but is the upgrade really neccessary? If it's a thickness issue, don't sweat it. Chances are, the piston to pin height, case bore center are going to introduce minute differences that will pretty much guarantee all the deck heights won't be the exact same. And how accurate are you able to CC the heads? How much volume does .002 thou of deck difference add up to?

I suppose it comes down to how precise you have to be. A $7000 race motor might warrant the extra expense and effort.

By the way, what's your deck height now and static CR? I can tell you that I went with a tight deck (about .045") and 8.3:1 CR on my 1600DP and it would kick my old GB 1776's a$$ bigtime.

I have to take the muffler off to fit it through the door way. The apartmenet is doing thier yearly inspections of the apartments at the end of this week. I think it'll be a good idea to get the engine out of the living room while that goes on.

My wife has night school the next two nights before the inspections, so i'm going to have to see if one of my friends will come over to help take it to the back of my bus.

Then again, she has lifted a turnkey motor onto the engine stand a few times before. Do I take the chance of her dropping it? hmmmm.

I got a set of odd ball sized ones from Rimco and they had them lying around the shop. I didn't have to pay for them to be ground, etc. and it did not cost that much.

it's not that they are hit or miss on thickness, what I said was that you MUST DEBURR them first. You can't just take them out of the package and put them on the barrel and bolt them up!

you have to deburr the OD and ID of the flat surface. THEN you measure them. If all is Kosher, you can install.

All brands are the "same" AFAIAC, they probably are all made by the same Taiwanese guy across the Pond, LOL. They just have a different blister-pack.

We have more on the shelf then almost anyone, I'll even let you pick and choose to find a set that makes you happy since you are local.

Yeah that seems to be true. I have 40-50 sets from most of the major vendors, CB, Bugpack, Scat and EMPI. They all need to be prepped and measured before use.
