Heads, how much would you spend?

Post by MASSIVE TYPE IV »

This poll will dictate what happens with the design of the heads that we are working on. I urge everyone that is a TIV enthusiast and reads this post to please vote and let us know how much you would spend.

Keep in mind that currently a set of fully ported and polished heads for a TIVrun around 1K bucks by the time you are finished rebuilding a set of 25+ year old heads.....

The heads will have a TI exhaust port but will retain the TIV intake port, it flows like a monster anyway and will stay compatible with the current manifolds on the market. That saves money. The heads will closely resemble a stock TIV head and will have as many fins as possible around the exhaust ports. A TI style merged header would work almost effortlessly as long as it has slip joints to aid in the install.

Heads would have basically any size valves anyone could want up to 50x40, and maybe even bigger. Big valves won't be needed near as much with a better flow characteristic, especially for engines that won't be super low torquers.

This will change all the engine combinations and as soon as these heads are finished I'll be building engines left and right with cam changes to see what the heads like. Chances are more cams with TI characteristics would work with these heads like a charm.....Split duration might just end up with a plus on the intake size instead of the exhaust like we use now for std heads..

My goal with these heads:
Run cool, keep the finnage as much as possible
Increase exhaust port flow
keep them compatible with current cooling systems
make them compatible with TI larger diameter heater boxes
keep them using TIV rocker assembliesand valve covers(for cost reasons)

Above all make them A BOLT ON!!! These heads will come into the states only as barecastings and will get CNC port work, the correct guide and seat material, and severe duty valves with 8mm or smaller stems for custom orders.....

So, now go vote and tell me the maximum you would pay for a set of heads that will unleash atleast 75HP more from any current combination that I currently build. Don't be stingy!

Remember the persons working with me on this are watching these threads. If we don't have the demand they won't make the supply with my assistance. I'm willing to be the guinea pig, supply the test engines(mostly built from used parts) give the time and the enthusiasm to make this happen.

All I need is support and comments. If you have ANY QUESTIONS ask them in this thread!

Jake, I've got a question:

Are we talking heads for the Wild Side, or can they work on mild street engines?
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

These are for any engine...My idea is a set of heads that would increase power on any engine, but really shine on 2270 and larger engines....

These won't be like the wold Remmele heads. Working people will be able to afford these!

IMHO, i think you would sell ALOT more heads if they were just better than stock. i mean nothing different that would cost TOO much. i couldnt see myself paying over 1K for heads, UNLESS they had 2 cams per head...........hehehehe. but thats just me, im sure there are alot of people that will pay more and such, but like you said, you want more people to see how awesome the type 4 engine is, and if some mediocre heads came out, for a halfway decent price, im sure you will start a RABY REVOLUTION..........
ex.
like some 044s vs. stock vw type 1 heads.
super raby heads vs. stock vw type 4 heads.

Would u b able to buy bare castings and do the ports -valves-seats and whatever else u might like to do yourself?????

like bare 044s

These heads would be along the same lines as an 044 for a TI engine.....same idea. As long as we can make another 75HP as a general rule and have cool running thats all I care about.
I'm shooting for the masses, not selling just a few a year of these. I suppose we could sell them bare, but that causes alot of problems in its self with compatibility of stuff. I'm HUGE on compatibility.

These heads could have weld and port work done to go on engines like my "Super Heros"..........Possibilities are endless.

My goal is an out of the box bolt on head for under 1,500.00 per pair!

Come on guys.....130 views and just 29 votes.

These heads will allow a 250BHP engine reliable enough to be daily driven and even pull A/C with no problems at all. Modern power would have a new meaning.

VOTE DAMN IT!!!

OK-OK, you dont need to yell...
Jake, your scaring me with all these inovations, what are you trying to do-make me want to build T-4s exclusively?(it's working)

The following is just for a pricing reference;

I just shelled out Approx $400 to completely rebuild ONE 27 year old 2 liter bus head to STOCK specs. Cleaning,New seats, guides, valves, springs and exhaust studs and a couple of other small items. No porting or polishing. Only did the one because the other was just rebuilt less than 2k miles.
This was done by a very highly recomended shop in Cali (name shows up many times on this forum). I'm in N.Y.

Lets face it guys, just good used cores are getting hard to find!! Spent an afternoon 1 mile out in the back of a junk yard for mine. Luckily it was a good core!

Jake's talking new bolt on H.P.

I'll cast my vote.

I cast my vote for the 12-15 range. Heck good T1 heads cost that, so its not like giving up anything, and for a T4 head it sounds like these will be better than the 1500$ for head work we have to pay now, so it would be an improvement.

I am not that interested in T1 style headers though. Isn't that going backwards? The 4>2>1 header has been proven better than the 4>1. Right?

A 4-2-1 system would also work with this. Lat I heard Aircooled.net was working on a 4-2-1 TI system..

With these heads it would not be uncommon to break 300BHP from a medium size TIV engine. Cost would not be that huge either since the TI headers are so mass produced and would probably flow well enough for most 250 ish HP engines.

I'm sticking to TI exhaust ports for simplicity, and to keep the cost down. Sure a head like the porkies Shad was making is great, but they still restrict the TIV market because of cost.

Tghis is going to be bolt on power for sure....

As for rebuilding heads. I have not uesd rebuilt heads on my engines since 1995, just brand new AMC heads that are highly modified(even for stock applications they are modified) Out of the box they suck.

As for other shops going all TIV exclusively- Thats a great idea, but bear in mind that I have just now after 15 years of doing TIV work been able to do this. I still mix sonme TI and 356 work in also........ There is ALOT more profit in a TI engine for shops.

Headflowmasters is only $175.00 per head. And this includes new everything and any cracks welded up. You got took.....

Adrian charges me way more than that for the heads he does for me... Severe duty valve train and my mods add up fast. I have between 12-1500 in one pair of heads built from new castings.........BUT not a single failure since 97.

I'm a cheap SOB, so I don't think that a set of heads should cost more than $800. That's just me...but sure, if you want to hog'em out be my guest; but that'll cost ya.

Take care,

Eddie.
