GM 60-V6 101:
Here's what I've learned in my research......

Afraid that's not quite right RH4. All of the RWD versions of the 60-V6 are all iron (heads and block), including the Camaro, S10, Jeep, etc. They use a SBC "style" timing cover and water pump, though some are serpentine belted so the cover and pumps aren't interchangable. There is also compatibility issues when swapping timing covers and the oil pans - some combinations don't match up.
Except for the early Citation, all of the FWD versions of the engine use aluminum heads and a different design intake manifold (all EFI and most or all are DIS). The blocks for ALL engines (FWD and RWD) are iron though. The FWD versions use a special FWD timing cover with integral high mounted water pump.

There is also the Fiero version that was offered in 2.8L size. It uses the RWD style timing cover and serpentine belt system, along with iron RWD style heads and unique EFI intake.

For hot rodding, there is only one aftermarket carb intake I've been able to find, that's the Edelbrock - either 2bbl or 4bbl. It only fits the iron heads from the RWD cars. Plenty of cams and a few headers available to fit RWD versions - mostly S10 specific. The all Iron engine is the easiest to hot rod with old-school carb/header/cam changes. Even thought the Chevrolet Power book show a Weber intake for both the aluminum and iron head engines (and says they're available), I'll be darned if I can find anyone that has or sells these! That would be the ultimate "carb" intake system!

The only way to get an ALL Aluminum engine is to use the bow-tie GM block and FWD aluminum heads. These blocks have the smaller bore of the 2.8 and 3.1L engines, so an all aluminum 3.4L (or bigger) is out.

Very little aftermarket "hard" parts for the FWD engines. Some headers are available but are specific to FWD packaging and not too applicable for other (RWD) applications. No aftermarket cams available for the later aluminum head FWD engines - this may be because it could require a custom EFI computer to run it with a healthy cam swap. The FWD EFI engines are pretty much limited to bigger throttle bodies, maybe custom headers and custom ground cam. Anything is possible, but cost escalates rapidly!
FWIW, the later 3100/3400 series FWD engines use a roller cam and roller fulcrum rockers, are all EFI/DIS. These engines made significantly more HP and torque from the factory than the earlier 3.1/3.4L versions.
