I own a 1965 vw Beetle and need to install 3 point safetybelts in the backseat. Does anybody ever heard off that? I have somebody who can weld almost anything but need ideas where to start.
Ihave a car manual for a 1300 Beetle wich states that the upper installing points are behind the back of the bench but I can't find them ( the book is from 1965 but in German so maybe it is a different model)
I would apreciate any advise or Ideas;Thank you,
Simone
safetybelts in old Beetle
I would weld in some support brackets.
Thick gauge in a square ( 1ft) then smaller and bild it up to get a bolt in there.
You could get a ruff idea on how thick the tunnel is and simulate it under the window. I would then make long strips since the metal near the window is real thin. Also it then is opened up by the interior panel so its weak in that area.
There is not really much to tie into but putting in a huge slab under the window then continuing to the rear should be fine.
The thicker it is the more the bolt will be threaded. Good luck

I am in the process of installing some three-point seatbelts (retractable) in the rear of my 1970 Bug. The upper mounting points are already there under the headliner, about 3 inches up from the popout window latches right along the window opening. I haven't found any lower mounting points, but I am getting the backing plates to weld into the rear wheel wells. Cheers!

Re: safetybelts in old Beetle
VW often used to put a white plastic plug about 5/8" dia with a large philips screwdriver slot in the holes for seatbelt anchors. When I was wrecking a bug I used to cut this section out for use in cars / places that didn't have one. The proper belt anchor screws into the hole left when the plug is removed. You will probably find fixing the headliner is way more work than welding in the anchor.[email protected] wrote:I own a 1965 vw Beetle and need to install 3 point safetybelts in the backseat.
