cool new paint removal system

Post by jus'buggin »

I work at a friends garage on the weekend(for vw favors) and we just pulled a beetle body out of the shop that had been blasted and was sitting around shooting the sh!t and up pulls this guy in a truck asking us a buch of questions about it.

Well come to find out he owns a place that specializes in paint removal. Check this out cause here is where it gets good.

He has an oven that is big enough to put a beetle in that heats up to 800 plus degrees and bakes everything off of it....even rust. It is such a controlled environment that he garuntees that it will not warp the metal or anything. Due to the lengthy ramp up time and cool down time.

I really would like to see this in action....anyone heard of this before?

believe the guy said it would cost just over $300. He said that would be because it takes up his whole booth. smaller parts would be cheaper because he can split the cost with other peoples parts

The GREAT PAINT BAKE OFF

Post by Jerry D »

The problem I have with acid dipping and baking the paint off is the fact that those 2 methods remove paint from areas that you can't replace the paint in. Consequently the vehicle will start to rust in places that aren't even typical place for that particular vehicle to rust in.

This is especially true for hard to reach areas like the interior of the heater channels and between the rear roof sections. Media blasting is your best bet...

Hmm, does that hold true ? Is there paint in heater channels and in roof sections ? Remember, VW never painted the parts individually and then decided to assemble, they were done the exact same way you would see the car in bare metal. Now, maybe some metal coatings may be removed ( which would have happened naturally over the X number of years ), but you can easily spray into those areas ... Any seams the were factory done won't have paint as far as I can see .... I would think that any rust that was already occurring would be stopped by this process not enhanced, but you guys raise some interesting points .....

My T3 heater channels were bare inside, painted outside ....
