Cutting BIG holes in sheetmetal

Post by ol'68 »

Hey,
OK all you metal working gurus. Now that I'm about ready to mount an Eberspacher heater in ol'68, I notice I need to cut a few BIG holes in the firewall. How do you cut BIG holes (like 3 1/2 inches) without buggering up the sheetmetal? I did notice an adjustable drill bit at Sears the other day, kind of like a drill bit with a cutter attached to it you can slide in and out from the bit, but it says "drill press only" on the box. Kinda hard to do in a car trunk.

BTW, the holes in the bug this heater came out of look "factory" cut, they are that nice and clean, so there's got to be a way to do it. Are there metal hole saws?

If you have a compressor, get a body saw with a fine blade.

If you don't, use a dremel or rotozip.

I have a Milwaukee bi-metal hole saw that will cut up to 4" circles. Just take your time, keep it lubed and it does great.
