The Mulholland Look actually dates from the mid 70's When a body shop owner in Hollywood CA named Stew Dahlberg decided to customize a Bug that was in his shop, and thus the "Mulholland Look" was born. The Mulholland look is actually named for Mulholland Drive a famous winding road in the hills above LA. Stew then went on to start Creative Car Craft http://www.creativecarcraft.com/, one of the leading makers of fiberglass parts, both custom and stock repro for Volkswagens.
The Mulholland look was also the beginning of the "German Look" in the mid 80's, early German lookers looked a lot like Mulhollands. Since the Mulholland look started in '74, it now qualifies as a vintage look, and on my '74 is period correct. 8) This is the end of today's history lesson, be prepared for a pop quiz tomorrow.

Steve,
Your car looks fantastic. I hope my finished product is as good as yours, but mine's gunna be Cal-Look.

I guess some people just insist on their way or no way. I posted on the Bus board about a month ago on a "Baysplit" and got my head handed to me on a platter. Glad to see you're still up and around and it hasn't gotten you down. Like I said, your car is a real eye catcher, I admire you for the effort. 8)

thanks for the leson Steve. Where I lived in Germany there were a couple of beetles running around with this look. The guy would park his beetle next to his testarossa and it was a pretty cool site to see. I wish I had taken a picture of it but I had just bought my first beetle and hadnt been "biten" by the bug yet.

again you learn something new everyday

I'm not going to buy an Econoline and fiberglass it up to look like a Split Bus and I'm not going to buy a Volvo and try to make it look like a Squareback. If you want an ugly car, buy an ugly car and save yourself a lot of trouble.
You must be amazingly arrogant to presume to tell people what they should and shouldn't drive and what they should and shouldn't do with THEIR OWN PROPERTY... As my mother always said "If you can't say anything nice...Don't say anything at all." I sense that you are one of those VW "purists" for whom anything beyond stock is an affront to your sensibilities...
Nope. I'm definitely not one of those purists. I'm thinking of doing some things to mine which would severely offend those types. I'm not thinking of making it look like a hideous white trash mobile, though. I don't care if some photographer took photos of an ugly car - hey, Full House was watched for 1/2 an hour at a time by millions of people for years. It's still a terrible show. I didn't mean to tell anyone what they should do with their own property, either, I was simply advising anyone who wants a car which looks almost nothing like a VW to save their time and effort and buy a car which looks almost nothing like a VW. If someone wants to do something stupid which doesn't hurt anyone else, it isn't my place to TELL them not to do it.
So far as "don't say anything at all," that's lousy advice. If anyone can ever give me good advice which isn't going to seem nice to me but which they honestly think will help me, I want them to give it. After all, what you say to me in your message isn't "anything nice" and you certainly said it. You felt that it was good advice and felt obliged to provide it. I disagree but sincerely appreciate your desire to help me. Saying something unkind for the sake of saying something unkind is rude and shouldn't be done, but saying something which may seem objectionable in an attempt at providing assistance is honorable and occasionally even valiant. Saying something a bit more strongly and therefore more offensively than intended is often accidental and a mixture of honorable and regrettable. I apologize for being offensive, but I find that car incredibly offensive to good taste, rather painful in fact (having nothing to do with it's being a VW) and therefore my previous response was stronger than intended; I should have wanted a minute or two for the pain to subside before typing.

mez i posted this to get some info.

so u think that looks like a white trash car, GET UR FRIGGEN EYES CHECKED, not only is it a extreamly well done car, its a very functional car. its not a compleatly diffrent type of car, its diffrent style"a good one i mite add" that mite not be so well done but think if it this way, "this is not to offend anyone" more ppl have bugs that look like stock bugs than ppl do the mullholland look, if ur gona rag on someones hard work for doing something u consider useless to there car, go on some rice forums, a wing on a fwd, and airdam tha restricts the flow of the radiator, stickers that make them supposedly look fast, ectera ectera, those are infact useless. the mullholland look IMO is awsome.

think what u want but dont try to force it on others, when u think up a look that hundreds, maybe even thousands of ppl like, drop a line in here again but untill then dont critisize others

Good golly, I thought the car was disturbing - this is only my second time on STF since I saw the thing - but your spelling is worse. You should have learned better spelling, grammar and syntax by third grade. If you like white trash looking cars, fine, enjoy it but don't deny it. You "might" - "mite" is a completely different word (I can't understand anyone who is too freaking lazy to spell "people," either, because that slight extra effort is minimal) - like it, that's fine, the work was done well, but it still looks like a poor attempt at creating a Camaro or ricer or some such out of a bug.
If you're happy with the doggone thing, don't worry about the fact that I don't like it. It doesn't bother me that you do (although I admit that seeing an actual photograph of it was upsetting). I don't like the fake Rolls Royce front ends, either, but I don't worry about the fact that other people do. As long as you're not hurting anyone, accept advice and opinions but don't let them upset you so. If there is good, useful advice offered then be open to it. Criticism is fine - I appreciate it myself and frequently request it - it is an excellent way to better oneself and one's work. Anyone who can't accept criticism is obviously unwilling (and, unless incredibly self-aware) unable to experience personal growth.
I value much advice offered on STF by people who have never created looks which thousands of people like. I suggest you do the same, but I at least approach meeting your criteria. My college newspaper column was liked by thousands of people (I even had strangers come up and tell me that it was their favorite part of the paper); at least thousands of people liked something(s) I created.

Mez.. What I really dont like is when people refer to old Camaros as white trash.. Sure.. They can be, when they are all beat up and crap.. (Ive met a few around here with a Hilborn scoop and says that its a super charger, but its disconnected right now)..

Presently we are racing in a serious manner a 1970 Z/28 with a 502, and other misc. goodies.. Sure, they car isnt all one color yet, as time and weather has taken its toll.. Although using such harsh opinions around here, you will catch some flames for it..

There's a difference between criticim and bashing. Calling someone a redneck car lover is not critiscm. If someone goes up to you and says your baby's dirt ugly, you wouldn't like it, nobody would. The way you say things just belittles your view point.

Here's my opnion of the Mullholand look. When done right it looks good. But it's not my style and I probably wouldn't build one.

See the difference from how you say it:

That's called forcing your opinion on others (aka being an jerk) and NOT criticism
