912E

Before buying one thinka about this:
There are NO Clutch cables or Accel. Not in Germany None.
Rotors are $250 a corner other than that they are a Great car.

912E rare parts

Post by Wildrider49 »

Take the spacer plug out of the 912E calipers and use 76 911S rotors. I can see the throttle cable being slightly different but the 912E uses the same 915 trans as the 76 911, just geared differently, and with a pinion shaft that is the correct diameter to match up to a type 4 pilot bearing. So, how would the clutch cable be different?

Or just get a 911 minus the engine and make your own 912. Engine bay size is the same from 65 to the late 80's.

ShotgunSymphony wrote:I wrote earlier about the VW motor swap into the porsche 911/912. Sounds like you can't do it with the 911. Can the motor in the 912 ever put out any decent power comparable to the 911? Can it be made fast, like around a 14 sec. quarter mile? Is there any other motor that would fit in the 911/912? Should I just bite the bullet and go with the 911? Thanks guys...
Go here, http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ click through to the main page and then click "911" at the top. The info covers 912 as well as 911.

It may sound like overkill but these guys make a living selling this stuff.

RE:About to convert to Type 4, any pointers?

Guest,

Start by looking at my site. Not being arrogant, just that I have been gathering images of all 911/912 Type 4 conversions there. I also have a couple of 356 Type 4 conversions. This will give you an idea of several different ways to do it. Full details and parts list for mine are under the "Gumby" link in the left menu. The other cars are under "Other Porsche Type 4 Conversions".

Also, sign up and get a login here. You will be notified via e-mail when someone replies to your post.

Be sure and see www.massivetype4.com My site has a section on using the DTM in an early 912 for a T4 transplant.

BTW, The 912E is equipped with a 923 gearbox.

The 912E sheetmetal will fit right in on the early 912's. This leaves plenty of room for working on the engine. Only problem is, they made ~2,099 912Es and the sheetmetal is getting harder to find. Jake's idea of using a DTM shroud has a few advantages. First, it's aftermarket and still in production. Second, I am sure it cools alot better than the "pancake" 914/912E stock system. And 3rd, it looks really really cool! It does however, fill up the engine bay a bit.

Jake, what are you doing for engine support during a conversion like this? I found hanging the engine from the stock 912 dog-ears allowed the motor to move front to back alot. I used a 912E mount bar and made supports that bolt to the outside of the rear frame. It's solid, stops the movement, and is removable/reversable should I ever decide to put a stock 912 engine back in (like that's ever going to happen).
