Leaking oil out the crank pulley seal

Post by 84 IM Flier »

I'm leaking oil at the crank seal. Is this because there is pressure build up in the motor and it has to come out somewhere, or just that the seal is bad? The motor is fresh, with less than 300 miles on it (pistons and cylinders have 5,000 miles on them). Of course, the spinning crank pulley flings the a bit of the oil around...what a mess.
The motor is vented to a breather box and the valve covers are also vented.

Does your pulley have a smooth circumference? There are two types and you should use the grooved one as it help keep the oil from leaking.

Also check the oil slinger to make sure it is on correctly.

Turns out to be leaking from the generator tower and dribbling down one corner. Took the pulley off and realized that it wasn't leaking there. Replaced the gaskets at the base of the generator tower...should solve my problem.

The best thing I ever did was to install a breather box. I junked the crap lines that came with it and bought some thick strong hose. That by iteslf made a world of difference. If I were you I would check out a breather box to give that engine some relief.

I have a breather box and the valve covers are vented too. This winter I am going to try venting the breather box to the merged header for added vacuum. I'd rather do this than vent to one of my carbs and I may even pick up a hp or two (dream on).

Does anyone know where to buy one of those check valves that you install into the header for a scavenger?Paul
