oil screen

Post by 72beetle »

:?: if you have a seperate oil filter that screws on, do you need to have the oil strainer in the oil pan also. I am thinking about not installing it!!
let me know what you think.

I once had one of the studs that hold the deep sump to the bottom of the case come loose and get sucked up the pickup tube. It got caught in the oil pump gears and sheared off the nub that fits into the cam gear. I lost all oil pressure and was lucky enough to see it on the oil pressure gauge and turn the engine off before any other damage was done.

I was also lucky that it on;y damaged the pump and not the cam end. I replace the pump and put a screen in.

Do you need it.... it's your choise.

I don't run them on my motors.. But, they are all full flowed and I find that the oil screen seems to cause the motor to suck dry under hard acceleration.. I guess you could put a deep sump on to prevent this.. But, I have a lowered car, and I am scared of ripping one of those off..

I would use one myself also. At least until the 1st or 2nd oil change. Most machining debris that might have been left in the case should have been caught by then. Then you can ditch it if you feel lucky enough to not have a problem like Glenn had.

I removed mine when i installed a deep sump and full flow and turbo. I have no problems. to me, the screen is pretty much a hinderance, and it does nothing about the fine particles, which are the most dangerous. I would say ditch it, just make sure that you either put j/b weld or locktite (red) on the sump plate studs. I had to do this because they loosen really easily, and you never need to remove them unless you strip them.
good luck

thanks for all of your input!! I don't think that I will be putting it in. Like I said, I have a oil filter attachment and I think that it would work better then the silly screen. Some people say that it is nuts to take it out because VW put it there for a reason and it is better not to change anything. I say that it is silly since the pick up tube runs right to the oil pump and from there to the filter. I really don't think that there is going to be that many particals that are that big to chew up the oil pump. But I do think it would be better off if the filter came before the pump. These are just my thoughts.

72 Beetle,

I Run one and here is why. The oil pump is probably one of the most important parts of your whole motor (if you don't agree try running your motor with-out one). Now even if you have a remote spin on filter, those are all installed after the pump leaving the pump unprotected from crap in the oil. I don't no about you but I would rather run one to at least give the pump some protection. Besides removing it does not in anyway improve power. And to those that say it restricts flow.. You should check out how much LESS screen that a full boogie race oil pump pick-up has for a V8 chevy engine.

The choice is yours but why do ANY modifications that do nothing to improve performance.... Oh ya.. This is Just my opinion

all cars come from the factory with oil screens on the pump pickup
