Problem seams/roof channels

Post by russell »

I have just acquired and am restoring (tidying up would be a better description) a 1970 1200 beetle. The roof seams, particularly above where the doors close each side, have some rust - there is small hole if you look up underneath from the door jamb and the seam is separated for an inch or two in this spot. It is also a bit patchy at other points right down to the rear wings. This looks like a tricky repair - is this a common fault (I haven't noticed it on other bugs) and does anyone have any tips for repainring this?

I am also having problems with my rain gutters on my bug. Mine are not rotted out or anything. They do have a bit of rust and flaking paint. They are pitted. I was trying to figure out how to do the work on this area. I havent found any tools to get down in the gutters to sand them down. I also find that it would be hard to putty these areas to make them smooth again. Any one have ideas?

3-M makes a "clean and strip"wheel that attatches to a drill and it works real well to get into those rain gutters.......they are about 4 inches in diameter and look like a rice cake . They work real well. Will try to find a product part number for you, and put up here later.
