the "new topics" forum?

A recent topics forum (or hot topics forum) would be better for viewing the latest posts and not losing track of them when you leave and come back, in the event that they have not been posted to since you left?

The old forum had it this way and it was basically a ranking of the latest topic posts that did not expire.

I'd guess this software has the capability for it. Maybe you could just give the string with the mode value in it so we could use that, if you don't want to change the menu.
