Anybody ever buy a sliding rag from Street Beat Customs?

Post by mechmitch »

I have seen one of the sliding rag sunroofs from Street Beat for a friend's Chevy show truck. It looked pretty good and came as a complete kit. I see they offer one specifically for bugs but it ain't cheap ($500 for canvas). Has anyone ever tried one on a bug? I'd hate to piss away $500.

street beat customs - rag top

We have people in our group with them installed.

Keep your eye open. You can commonly find project bugs with them installed... we just picked one up for $300... pulled the roof... welded on a new top.... sold it for $350.

Just about broke even.....

cheaper to find/ cut/ rebuild original rag roof?

Post by mechmitch »

That being said, do you think that it would be easier to pull an original rag roof from a salvage, rebuild it, and graft it on? My only prob is that mine has been chopped and my roof is made up of about 3 sections grafted. It was done right, but I don't know how well an original rag roof section would fit. Anyone ever tried this?

Original ragtops are ALOT better then aftermarket kits IMO. There shouldn't be any problem putting it on your choptop. Only reason why it's athat way is to extend the total length of the roof when lowering it.

Check out my site (link on signature), in the articles section there's a how to chop with factory sunroof. Should give you an idea on how the ragtop should fit???

I'm doing the opposite myself, I took out my aftermarket kit and putting back in a full roof to fill the hole in my choptop Oval.

Stay away from Street Beat. Their product is pretty poor quality, and their customer service is virtually nonexistent.

What to expect when finding an original rag roof?

Post by mechmitch »

Good info on Street Beat, you probably saved me $500 plus a headache. So now I look for an original rag roof to graft. I think I know of the remains of one in a salvage. What do I look for though as far as what to avoid?

You could also check out www.parisbeetles.co.uk as well, I know their sunroofs are really good. I've seen both the bus and bug ones from them, and they were very nice.
