Rear cooling vent

Post by donsbug »

What is the best way to paint the area under the cooling vent under the rear window? How do you prepare the area for paint? I'm doing a whole color change so it needs to be painted.

Since the area under my vents was in pretty good shape, I pressure washed it and cleaned the area as best I could, shot in a light layer of primer (probably didn't cover everywhere), then set my spray gun to almost mist, i.e., not very much paint and lots of air with a real narrow cone and just sprayed down through the vents. A little at a time so I didn't create drips. I went light on the clear coat just like the primer. I sprayed inside before I was ready to spray the outside surface, so if I got too much paint on the outside, I could reprep. Not perfect, but came out pretty good. You have to really look closely to see the imperfections and can't tell anythings not right if you stand back and look at the car. This was easier than I thought it was going to be and came out better. Good luck.

I recommend masking the vents first so you won't overpaint them. Paint the inside then take of the mask then paint the outside.
