Know it all
Thank you for the unsolicitated, gratuitous, and counterproductive assessment of the thing world according you Mr. Volkswagen Bob. Up your aspirations. Thingk positive and you will.

Hey Richard
I suppose you think your right & everyone in the Thing world is wrong.
Suppose Mud
I suppose that I climbed a steep, muddy, off road hill yesterday, one that had deep tracks half way up from a failed attempt. The Thing amazed us with its sure and steady grind all the way up. It gives me butterflies to thing what she will do with the new motor; 1915 cc, ported, polished, balanced top to bottom at 130 hp. The new AS41 monster will ship in 10 days. The new roll cage that wraps the windshield and accepts a slide-in aluminum roof cover is next. Then a new window design with a zip-on canvas enclosure (with or without plastic/glass window) for the back.
I'm somewhat surprised to see that Bob (allegedly....he really should invest in a Dell or so laptop to carry on the road so that he could sign off in a less anonymous fashion....probably spent all his dough from being the vw expert on his little island looking for oil or gold or some such) Ingman, Grey, Chub and the rest of his fun names has chosen to sling mud. Well, regards and good luck to you, Scott and to Uncle Bob I.

what is it exactly that you want us to contribute? Probably not many know this list is here, and if they do, it looks dead anyway. So if they want a question answered or a problem solved they look elsewhere. Although I'm not quite sure what all of this topica stuff is about, i've been observing that list for the last few years...guess i wasn't paying close enough attention though, huh?
110 or vw2 cam
Go to the other site if you want to get your eyes scratched out by a bunch of sorority girls who are constantly patroling the perimeter of their little club's domain.
I'm having an engine built for the old 74 thing. The builder wants to know if I want a 110 cam or a vw2 for my mostly pedestrian driving style to walmart and the like. He also wants to know if I would mind putting in Weber 40's (his preferred carb) or if I want Kads or dels. I don't have a preference on cams or carbs. Anybody out there got a strong opinion either way? Also, I weighed the car with a full tank and 2.5 passengers (my wife and yellow lab). And dang, it weighs 2600 lbs. My engine guy, Don, www.bugpatch.com . says that I'm going to have a weight per horse power ratio up from what I have now at 43.5 lbs per horse to 18 lbs per horse (140 hp). What to make of that. I think that he's saying that I don't need to add anything else to make it faster....the original goal is a high performace type 1 engine that is durable and easy to maintain. We refer the the effort as a "retarded racing engine".

man, i wish i had some money to dump into a new engine. What I would do for some extra horsepower to show off with. For now its just getting the old worn-out 1600 dual port to run right. I've tried 4 different carbs, 2 distributors, 2 ignition coils, new points, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, fixed a vacuum leak from the intake manifold boot, and the damn thing still won't accelerate right. Accelerates like crap in low rpm, and if i pound the gas down all the way, the car wont go either, its like its flooded or not firing right or something. Ha, anyone have any idea, i've tried on the type 1 forum to no avail twice.

Maybe your motor is just tired.
Go back to the basics... check compression, new spark plugs, adjust the valves, set the points, adjust the idle speed and set the timing.
I just put new rings and heads on my engine and it has a lot more pep.
The Thing is a heavy car so don't expect to get beetle performance.
