steering gear mounting clamp orientation

Post by germansupplyscott »

thingers,

i am remounting the steering gearbox on my thing after restoring the front end. in the manual i have (haynes beetle/ghia) it refers to the steering gearbox clamp having two orientations, one for beetle and one for ghia. the bracket has markings "13" and "14" on it.

which one points forward on a thing, "13" or "14"?

Good question, since a Thing is basically a `Ghia pan - I don't recall but I'd be willing to bet it goes on in the "Beetle" position, since the Thing steering column/wheel don't mount as low as in the `Ghia. It'll be obvious if it's wrong, the steering box input shaft won't be in line with the column.

marc,

the vehicle is not assembled yet, so i have no way to check the column to box alignment. i can attach the gearbox at a later time, but it is so much easier to do it all now.

Oh. I'm pretty certain it needs to be in the "Beetle" (higher) position so that's where I'd put it unless someone who knows otherwise comes forward.
