What size front tires with drop spindles?

Post by The_Dude »

It appears that my left front tire is rubbing just inside the fender lip pretty badly. The VW shop around here told me to switch to 145 tires on the front. What size is everyone else running? Thanks.

What size are you running now that is rubbing? You could use a 175/55 on a 4 1/2" front rim, or a 195/50 on a 5 1/2" rim. I personally would opt for either of these before a 145.

I currently have 165/15s. I would like to try and keep the same rims. The are just stock 5 lug chrome VW rims.

I just had CB Dropped Spindles installed on my 58 and I'm running 165's ,they seem to only rub under hard cornering or hard braking while cornering for me. I don't have a adjustable beam or I would have had it raised a little bit to have it sit just right with the 165's.

depending on what kinda look you are going for stock or custom, sounds like stock with the stock 5 lug chrome VW rims, id go with the 145's, on my 57 i had 125 temps on 5 1\2" stock 5 lug chrome VW rims  i didnt drive it everyday either and i think the longest trip was about 80mi round trip, good times, ill post pics if i ever get my f-n hp scanner to work with XP :x

Wow, those are pretty narrow - what's the narrowest recommended for a 5 1/2" rim? I've got 195/50s on right now, and have the same problem with rubbing...

I would have to agree w/ Ribz on this one. I as well have run the 145's on 5 1/2 chromies as well as 125 temps. I am currently running 135's which has no rub at all but are very narrow. I have seen the 177/55 that Drake referred to & these look very cool  but seem to be very pricey. The only place I have seen advertise them is Custom Speed & Parts in an older issue of one of the VW magazines. Their website doesn't offer them.

It would seem w/ 165's you're trying to retain a somewhat stock look? but w/ the dropped spindles you would need to go w/ some type of lower profile tire. The dropped spindles would increase your front track about 1 1/8".

Remember, it's your ride & only you know what you like. Good Luck :D
