converting 1500 SP to 1600 DP
What is needed to convert my heads from SP to DP will they mount right up? I know the obvious like Intake but what about exhaust and head studs? What about compression ratio if I change the P/C to 1600 will stock 1600DP heads work?
Thanks for any insight

You'll need four short head studs. They go in the top row, center two, of each side. Of course, you'll need a DP intake.
If you change the P/C to 1600, stock 1600dp heads will work. However, I'd go ahead and cc your heads and check your deck height, just to make sure there's no significant change in compression.

If you do convert, send me the heads!

Thanks,
Ok, now how would I cc the heads? I understand the deck height.

A multitude of the VW vendors supply a head cc kit with a syringe or burette and a lexan plate to cover the combustion chamber.
The basic process is to fill the combustion chamber with a measured amount of liquid to determine the volume thereof.

If you'll be using a stock DP intake manifold you'll have to replace one 8mm case stud with a longer one to pick up the center mounting point on the manifold. You can trim SP overcylinder tin to fit but it won't have the proper internal directional tab and will leak cool air, so get the right stuff. As I point out every time this subject arises, most SP cases are not up to the stresses imposed by performance modifications - this could be the "kiss of death" for your engine. What's the case number?

I will buy new tins
Marc,
The case (H??? maybe) it is original in a 67 beetle.
I will be going to dual carbs but stock 1600 p/c's with header exhaust w/exchangers.
If this is a kiss of death please let me know.
Hoxviii,
what do you do with them? if you don't mind me asking.
thanks guys

A `67 H0 case isn't as bad as the H5s used in `68/`69 but it's still 35+ years old and without putting steel inserts into the headstud threads I wouldn't try to hotrod it. If that's already been done, the biggest concern is that it has rather small oil passages but with a good pump and cooling system it would be OK for a street 1600DP.

All I do are SP motors and you can never have too many heads laying around.

Justin,
I am just curious how much power can you get in a SP. What would I have to do, I would like to stay SP if it is worth my time and money.
All I want is more power and good mileage.
My motor has around 100K on it now.
thanks

You can tweak a 1600SP up to 70HP or so and still be "streetable" but my concern about the adequacy of the case for a higher-performance engine applies regardless of the type of heads in use. A solid "stock" 1600SP (1970-ish) in a `67 car isn't a rocket but should be able to stay out of trouble in traffic and still pull down ~30mpg; what else/more are you after?

I think one of the biggested restrivtions on any VW engine is the carburator. The VW engines got chocked down so much by some of the smaller carburators that they simply could not make enough power or rev high enough to any damage to the internal components. By simply bolting on a bigger carb, within reason, you should free up a few hp.
