cutting brakes

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

cutting brakes

Post by noodles »

I've noticed that they have two types of cutting brakes, one for drum brakes, and one for disc brakes. I've installed a turning brake on my baja and no matter what i've tried, they still don't work. I was just thinking that maybe I was sold the wrong type of turning brake, the disc brake unit instead of the drum unit. I've adjusted and bled my brakes over and over, and i have the firmest brake pedal anyone can have in a bug. I'm just looking for some answers.

The only real difference between the two is that you need bigger bores for discs. Is the unit mounted acording to the directions? Are you sure the problem is not with plumbing. Have you contacted the manufacture for assistance> If not why not?

Will the turning brakes work ok if you apply pressure to the foot brake 1st. If they do then you don't have the brakes adj up tight enough. See -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/brakehowto.htm

You might consider a residual pressure valve between the master cylinder and the steering brake. This keeps a low amount of pressure on the wheel cylinders and thus the shoes are against the drum without enough pressure to affect normal operation. Have used these before, work rather well.
