Urethane Squeeks

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Urethane Squeeks

Post by Kubelmann »

As Kubelmann comes together, I get al kinds of complaints about the urethane squeek issue. Then I hear that white lithium will quiet it all down. I hear that the steering "rag joint" (if urethane) will put your hands to sleep with vibration. So my questions are these.

Does white lithium really soften the squeek.
Is urethane worth the hassle if you are willing to replace rubber parts.
Front arm bushings in urethane are said to be very "worth it" true/false

Input here would be appreciated

Thanks, K-mann

I tried different types of grease on my Landcruiser squeaks but it would never last very long. I would just turn up the stereo until I tried graphite. It took care of the squeak and stayed put.

Don't know about the diff in rag joints as I get so much vibration and wheel snap I don't think I could tell the difference.

I found that the urethane mounts in any application I tried made the handling firmer and lasted a lot longer. It may have added to vibration but I never noticed.

I've had urethane right through the car for over six years of on and off road driving. It gives the vehicle that new car tightness and I haven't found any appreciable wear during a few strip downs. I haven't pounded the car much tho'. I can't hear the squeaks if any cos of the exhaust note, but have heard that graphite and talcum powder both work.

I would recommend it.

Teflon grease seems to work best for me (came with the urethane)... Sometimes when its cold out it'll barely sqeak, but otherwise its quiet.

Might be dumb to respond to your own thread but here goes.. I found that Chirco.com has some very good Urethane parts. Not the garden variety that I have found other places. Am getting ready to buy all the Urethane form them. I hear that they have a very good reputation. Any feedback abut them would be appreciated. Because of my rural location, I am a web based offroad parts buyer. K-mann

I have not noticed Chirco being of any better quality than the rest. Their sevice is OK. Without a doubt Mc Kinzies is the best for true quality off-road parts, however they are not internet friendly. Too bad. Same goes for FAT. Both places do a good mail order business but it is catalog and telephone generated. Good luck. Bob Ingman

On the issue of Chirco. They have an outstanding list of Offroad parts and VW oem parts. For offroad the list QUALITY CHIRCO PRODUCTS as the manufacturer for OEM parts they list QUALITY RESTORATION PARTS as the manufacturer. I am planning on calling them in the morning to figure out how these compare to old school GERMAN parts. For a fact original manufatured GERMAN parts are superb. The reason is simple fantastic metalury and perfect quality control. I have no problem with mail order via catalog. I need to get a McKenzie catalog. Thanks to all for the sharing. K-mann

just a thought. i fixed the sqeak problem in my baja by drilling a hole through the bushing and taking a die grinder with a small cutting wheel to put a spiral groove in the inside of the bushing. then installed the bushing and lined up the hole in the bushing and the grease nipple hole and put in a slightly longer nipple (to keep bushing from turning) made it a fully greasable bushing seems to work good so far.
