I have read all the posts on the megasquirt and am very interested in its use. I have a type 1 and would like to know how much is involved. From the posts it looks like most are using it on type4 probably due to the fact that fi was a stock poss and the manifolds and injectors have already been used by vw... I cant remember if vw ever developed this for the type 1 and i am wondering how it would be done? any links to web sites or other info will be apreciated.
Thanks
Troy

troy, se habla espanol?
even if you can't, i'd suggest a trip to any tijuana junkyard for mexican throttle bodies, intakes, etc... you could probably even get new stuff for a reasonable price down there.

And if you do, call me. I'd love to get my hands on some new/good condition Type 1 Fuel Injection parts. Plenum, runner boots, throttle body. Pretty much any part that can be used to convert to EFI. Does anyone know of a good source?

Here's an idea from Down Under: http://www.clubvw.org.au/leigh_harris.htm
Ok, it's a turbo engine, but it's injected and it's a T1
He's been using the plenum chamber from a wasserboxer (same as T4 F.I. I think...) and some custom manifolds.

Just find some type1 FI stuff, manifolds, TB and all that. Should be easy enough to find, or try BeetleMex(?) they import the engines and other parts, and swap you pan to a new MexBettle so you have a new car..

Not a cheap option, but surely an option...check out CB Performance. They sell DP intake end castings with FI bosses. I don't know what injectors fit beside their own (GM part maybe?), but they also sell injectors and fuel rails for these manifolds. They are about $100 for the pair, plus extra $$$ for whatever else you choose to buy new.

Hello-
Here's an idea from Down Under: http://www.clubvw.org.au/leigh_harris.htm
Just a suggestion for improvement: make the runners all the same length. If you make them dissimilar lengths, tuning, smoothness, etc. suffer a bit (each cylinder will draw in air differently due to wave effects). For a really cheap-and-dirty fabrication, consider using some thickwalled smooth tubing for runners. Use something like IDF/DRLA manifolds with injector bosses, then make up little plates that bolt atop them with stubs for the tubing to slip on (and perhaps a bend before the stub so all the tubes go toward the center). Then, using a knife, cut all your "runners" the same length
You can choose a length to benefit tuning, too.
He's been using the plenum chamber from a wasserboxer (same as T4 F.I. I think...) and some custom manifolds.
Yep, the plenum looks the same as a 1.8/2.0 (not 2.0 914) T4 plenum. 1.7 is smaller and 2.0 914 is larger with the TB oriented differently.
Also, I don't know what kind of power you're looking for, but FI T1 pieces could be used, or you could modify T3 manifolds. T3 manifolds should be pretty easy to find. Cut the runners before they turn inward at the fan shroud and slip 1.25" tubing over them and run them to a plenum. The disadvantage with these parts is flow ability... I know that the stock T3 parts are 1.25" OD (steel tubing), and suspect the stock T1 parts are about the same, which can be quite restrictive.
Take care,
